This steak sandwich was our healthier take on the philly cheese steak. We served it with a side of roasted sweet potatoes to round out the meal.

Ingredients
  • 1/2 lb of top sirloin or flank steak
  • 3 tsp oil.
  • 1 red pepper
  • 1 small onion
  • 1 cup chopped mushrooms.
  • 2 Crusty Kaiser Rolls
  • 4 slices of smoked Gouda
  • 1 shallot
  • 1/4 cup of chicken or beef broth, or red wine
  • 3 tbsps of Miracle Whip
  • 1 tsp of Lemon Juice
  • 1 tbsp of fresh chopped oregano
  • 3/4 lb of sweet potato - washed and peeled. Cut into slices.
  • 1/4 tsp of cayenne
  • Salt and Pepper

Directions
  1. Soak the Sweet Potatoes in Hot water for 10 minutes.
  2. Preheat the over to 450.
  3. Drain and Dry Sweet Potatoes thoroughly.
  4. Toss with 1 tbsp of Olive oil and the cayenne.
  5. Coat the bottom of a cookie sheet with olive oil and sprinkle it with Salt and Pepper.
  6. Place Sweet Potatoes on the cookie sheet in single layer.
  7. Cover the Cookie sheet with tightly with foil and bake for 15 minutes.
  8. Remove the foil and rotate the pan. Bake for another 25-30 minutes or until the potatoes have begun to brown.
  9. Meanwhile, heat a 10 inch saute pan over medium heat and add 1 tsp of oil. Cook the steak on each side for about 4-5 minutes.
  10. Remove from pan and allow the steak rest, tented with foil.
  11. To the steak pan, add the remaining oil and the shallot - stirring constantly for 30 seconds.
  12. Deglaze the pan with the broth or wine and boil until the liquid has thickened and reduced by half.
  13. Add the Onions and Peppers and saute for 3 minutes.
  14. Add the mushrooms and saute until they have released all their moisture and the pan juices have evaporated, about 3-4 minutes more.
  15. While the mushrooms are cooking - place the kaiser rolls, brushed with olive oil, in the oven to toast.
  16. Mix the Miracle Whip, lemon juice and oregano together in a small dish. Add Salt and Pepper to taste.
  17. Remove the rolls and sweet potatoes from the oven.
  18. Thinly slice the steak. Divide among the two rolls.
  19. Top with the onion and pepper mixture.
  20. Add two slices of Gouda and return to over for 4 more minutes to toast the cheese.
  21. While the sandwiches toast, move potatoes to bowl and mash with some oil and Salt and Pepper until chunky, but smooth in consistency.
  22. Remove the sandwiches from the oven - spread the top wth Sauce, and serve hot.

Marc,

I chose this recipe as my "pick of the week". Every week I choose one new recipe for dinner. I made this last night and it was spectacular. Everything I hoped it would be and more!

Thanks.
