Ingredients
- 1 (8-ounce) carton commercial sour cream
- 3/4 teaspoon soda
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup shortening
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans
Directions
- Combine sour cream and soda; set aside.
- Combine sugar, flour, and shortening; blend with pastry blender until crumbly.
- Spoon half the mixture ino a greased 9-inch square pan.
- Combine remaining crumb mixture with sour cream mixture, egg, and nutmeg; mix well.
- Spoon batter over crumb mixture; sprinkle with nuts.
- Bake at 350 degrees for 35 to 40 minutes.
- Yield: one 9-inch square cake.
