A lovely spicy pear side dish, perfect for winter pears and so easy to make. Goes great with roasted or grilled meats.

Ingredients
  • 4 lbs. of Anjou pears, peeled, cored and cut in large chunks
  • 3/4 cup of freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1 cup of honey
  • 1/2 tsp of ground cloves
  • 1/2 tsp of ground ginger
  • 1 tsp of ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp of chipotle chili powder-I tend to use a little more than 1/4 tsp.
  • 1/2 cup of currants
  • 2 pieces of cinnamon sticks (two inches)
  • 2 pieces of crystallized ginger, coarsely chopped

Directions
  1. Mix all the ingredients except currants, cinnamon sticks and crystallized ginger in a medium saucepan.
  2. Simmer uncovered for 45 minutes until the sauce thickens.
  3. Pears will remain crunchy.
  4. Add currents and simmer 15 minutes more, partially covered.
  5. Add cinnamon sticks and ginger pieces and refrigerate until ready to serve.
  6. This will keep a week in the refrigerator.
  7. It is good poured over a block of cream cheese and served with water crackers as an appetizer.
  8. Or serve alongside a roast pork loin, or grilled pork chops.
  9. We have even served it over ice cream for a different kind of hot/sweet taste.
