Penne With Sausage Basil And Mustard Recipe
Heaven. A friend made this for me and I asked to share the recipe with a few friends... let's not get into the semantics of numbers. Anyway, this is a real comfort meal and I loved it and hope you do, too.

Ingredients
  • 1 pound penne
  • 1 Tbsp. extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 1/2 pound Italian sausage meat, out of the casings and crumbled
  • 3/4 cup dry white wine (more to drink while cooking)
  • 3/4 cup heavy cream
  • 3 Tbsp. whole grain mustard
  • 1/8 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1 cup julienned fresh basil

Directions
  1. In a large pot cook the penne per package directions until just al dente. Remember, until it's drained it's still cooking.
  2. To julienne the fresh basil - roll it into a log and make thin crosswise cuts.
  3. In a large skillet heat the oil.
  4. Add in the sausage and cook over a medium heat until it's browned. Add the wine (which will deglaze the pan and make it easy to clean later while adding flavor to your sauce, too.) Simmer until it's reduced by half.
  5. Mix in the cream, grainy mustard, and pepper flakes and simmer for just a couple of minutes to heat through.
  6. Stir the sauce into the pasta.
  7. Sprinkle the fresh basil on top.

Awesome! There's a guy at my local farmer's market who sells wonderful turkey sausages, including an Italian sausage. So I could even make a reduced-fat version of this tasty sounding dish! I never thought of putting mustard with pasta before. Thanks for sharing!

I'm so glad your friend shared! This is an interesting set of flavors with the grainy mustard and red pepper flakes for some added zip and fresh basil - all the things I love. I will definitely be trying this out on some of the family (and so the recipe spreads to more people)...you've been on a roll in my absence. Please keep them coming - I'm loving them all!
