Ingredients
  • 8 slices bacon, cooked crisp and drained
  • pepper
  • 1 stick butter
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves minced
  • 3 cans (14-1/2 oz. size) green beans, drained
  • 1 can (14-1/2 oz. size) green beans, undrained
  • 1/2 cup dark brown sugar, divided
  • 1 teaspoon good balsamic vinegar
  • salt and pepper
  • 4 tablespoons bacon butter pan drippings
  • 2 tablespoons butter

Directions
  1. Fry bacon in pan until done, sprinkling both sides as it cooks with coarse ground pepper.
  2. Drain on paper towels, set aside.
  3. Add first measure of butter to bacon grease.
  4. Add chopped onion and cook slowly over low heat for about 20 minutes until soft and sweet.
  5. Remove from heat.
  6. In crock-pot, put drained green beans.
  7. Sprinkle with a little salt and pepper. Sprinkle with half the bacon, broken into small pieces.
  8. Sprinkle with half the cooked onions.
  9. Sprinkle with half of the dark brown sugar.
  10. Drizzle with half of the bacon and butter drippings from pan.
  11. Repeat layer, using undrained can of green beans.
  12. Drizzle over the balsamic vinegar.
  13. Give all this a VERY gentle fold, folding only 2-3 times.
  14. Any more, and your green beans will begin to break up.
  15. Cut up remaining butter into pieces and dot top.
  16. Cover and heat over high until hot throughout.
  17. You can also do this on the stove, or even in the oven in a covered casserole dish.
  18. Serve when it is hot or simmer until ready to serve.
