Cabbage Rolls

    Recipe by Chuckieb: Cabbage Rolls/saved
At first glance a 2 hour bake time seems excessive. But the cabbage needs time to cook. It is only par-boiled to remove the leaves from the head.
I pulled it 15 minutes early because I was smelling it too much. As is, there was a little scorching on top but doesn't taste scorched.
Might want to throw some salt in the simmer solution.
Served it up with some potato salad.

Points...I'm going to admit to cringing whenever I see you've made one of my recipes. Honestly. In the 30 years I have made these cabbage rolls I have never once pulled them out looking as scorched as yours do. Did you add all the tomato soup and water that the recipe called for? And how close to the top bake element was your dish? Lastly, and I would never think to put this in my recipe, as I would just consider it 'common knowledge/sense' is if they were really starting to scorch that much and yet hadn't been in the full two hours (and two hours really does meld the flavours nicely and further soften the cabbage leaves) then I would have just reached for the old tinfoil and put a little cover over it for the last bit of baking time.

Good idea on the tinfoil. Didn't think of it. Made the tomato soup exactly to spec. Dish was in the middle of the oven. I did have a little extra hamburger mixture left over which I stuffed some of the smaller cabbage leaves and put them on top of the single layer rolls in a 9x11 casserole dish. Those leaves on top were the ones that started to scorch. They were the ones that were not immersed in the soup.

There we go....a double layer...not immersed in soup.....yep...that would do it.

Made this last night and we loved it! It was a pretty easy recipe as far as cabbage rolls go! The tomato soup made a delicious sauce, and cooking the whole head of cabbage to soften the leaves was the way to go..I omitted the bacon and used ground turkey and cooked brown rice (I don't use minute rice) ..also just a pinch of thyme to the meat mixture..I recommend this recipe for all who think making cabbage rolls are a lot of work! I also posted a pic... Thanks Janet:)

After a year in my box I finally made these! These are probably the quickest I have thrown together cabbage rolls ever! The bacon was a nice, different addition. The only thing I did different was to add in some chopped tomatoes to the meat. I agree with points that you really do need that 2 hr. cook time. I did end up cooking at 350 for about 1 1/2 hrs. or so. Added my pic to the bunch :)

These were made just as the recipe directed. I loved the filling, The resident critics (Fred and Liv) loved the cabbage rolls. The cabbage was tender, it was moist. It was also an easy dish to assemble, even in the dark (lost our power). Rolling the cabbage was easy with the whole cabbage leaves. Fred just ate his third portion He said, "Tell Janet, thanks" Can't get better than that in my book.
    Cabbage rollups are perfect. 10/17/14

I remember these, so yummy! I may make up another batch of these to freeze in single portions so Michael can have something quick to grab and take to work if he needs to. Your look great Tina!
