Wynnebaer's Classic Patty Melt

  • chuckieb 12 years ago
I had never heard of a Patty melt before in my life, but I made Corinne's Classic Patty Melt last night for dinner and I am now a devoted fan. My rye bread was fairly small so I ended up making 5 patties out of a pound of hamburger. I did add mustard as well. YUMMY!
Went to take a picture but the battery pack on my camera was dead. Argh.
Really fun recipe Corinne. I can see me making these a lot in the winter when I crave a hamburger but don't want to go outside in the snow and barbeque!
    Thanks for a great recipe!

Patty melts are so good. Glad you liked Corinne's recipe. When I worked at the Clock restaurant...(anyone remember them?) we sold them almost as fast as hotcakes. Good stuff.

I'm so thrilled you loved the Patty Melts, Janet. I remember the first time I had one was at HoJo's when I was a kid. Have been a favorite of mine ever since.

I've never had a patty melt 'cause I don't care for rye bread. Is rye bread a must?

I'm with you Frankieanne - I avoid rye bread because of the caraway seeds! But I do like Patty Melts and think that they are especially good with sourdough bread.

Frankieanne, my guy isn't a fan of rye bread either so like Gkwillow, I make his on sourdough.....Nothing like the stuff you have in your part of the country....Last time I visited the girls, I got a loaf on Fisherman's wharf to bring home....Actually bought 2 so I would know 1 was coming home with me....LOL

Oh, thanks to the both of you. I never thought of sourdough.
Well, Wynne, I always get a loaf of sourdough when I go to Fisherman's Wharf, too. Despite the fact I can get the very same brand at my local store. I think you are supposed to. :)

To me, its the strong/odd flavor of rye that enhances the hamburgers flavor. Isnt this with sourdough called a frisco burger or is that something entirely different? Either way a good hamburger is a good hamburger is a good hamburger. I cant wait to try this

Yes, a frisco burger is on sourdough. I think it has a Thousand Island-ish dressing and maybe bacon, too?

I finally made this tonight. I love patty melts but have never made one. This turned out great. The only problem I had was eating half the onions after caramelizing them while waiting for the patty to cook. So my end result was a bit shy of them. But it was a fantastic hamburger. This was also the first time caramelizing onions. Those were really good. Thanks for a great recipe Wynnebaer. Posted a pic

Thank you both. I made this again tonight. Needed to use up the rye and also had the kids over and they love patty melts too. This time I made an entire 12" skillet FULL of the onions. I never had onions like that before and this time did not want to run shy of them. Even those weren't enough. But thats only because we wanted to munch on them after.

Yet an other deprived Canadian child never having a patty melt! I can't say that anymore though it was delicious! I used sour dough bread b/c that is what I had and lots of swiss cheese. A bit sloppy to eat b/c of that but it is divine. Sorry I am a bit tardy with posting this as I have had the pic hanging around in my camera for a while. Oh well better late than never. Thanks so much Corinne:)

That's a great looking picture! Thanks for chiming in here. I still need to have one of these. The sourdough would do the trick for me.

Yes, either sourdough or rye is perfect and so is your photo. This is the sandwich I usually order when we go out for burgers.

So happy you enjoyed it, Joce....One of my all time fave ways to have a burger and I've finally turned my rye bread hating guy into a rye bread loving guy. And if you ask me, anything on grilled sourdough is yummy.

Rye is definitely the way to go!
And plenty of onion. No need for sugar. A good caramelized onion is savory sweet.
