I need to ask a flower question.....

Someone sent a basket with 3 African violets and ivy in it to my house.

I can deal with the ivy, but those African violets are in grave danger. I can grow anything outdoors but plants inside my home don't have a chance at any real lifespan.

    Help!!!!!

Pat, I love african violets. I use the wicking method for them. I have a shallow tray filled stones and I have my violets in pots sitting on top of the stones. I potted them with a thick piece of polyester rope in the pot and partially sticking out the hole in the pot to reach under the stones of the tray. I water from underneath and let the water wick up the rope. I feed once a week with Peter's and just keep the stones moist. I don't water the leaves and just pick off the spent flowers and leaves. They are easily propagated with root gro. Oh, I forgot, no direct sun...it will burn them up faster than a fry pan. I have them in a bright kitchen window, but no direct sun. In Florida, they like eastern exposure best. If the ivy is a moisture lover and wants to be sprayed, I would recommend putting them in separate pots. I don't think the two would do well as companion plants. Hugs~NYM

Man this sucks.....Firefall is postponed till tomorrow nite! Dang. Thunderstorms came through this morning and dumped a bunch of rain. Got nearly 3 inches. I know our friend's yard was already saturated, we were out there Thursday nite and it squished up to my ankles!

Have 2 extra kids here to go with us and then they were going to spend the nite after the party...now, since they are here anyway, they are going to spend 2 nites. ugh And I have to figure out something to feed them all! Can you say hot dogs? LOL

Had my eggs boiled and was getting ready to crack them open for deviled eggs (last minute request) when I got the call.

I was soooo ready for a cocktail!

    Spunk on my friends!

Thanks for all the suggestions on the African violets........I solved the problem and adopted them out to my daughter n law. She has a perfect window for them and I don't. They were already starting to turn look sad.......just can't do house plants!

NYM........I gave Jodi all your suggestions, she'll follow them.

Sorry your fireworks fun got rained on, Ang....but you still have time to get it in before the 4th.

Line.....guess we have the same problem........outdoors I'm a pro (good soil probably)....inside....beyond help!!!

HI, Gem.....we didn't abandon you! Hi, MR, pleclare, sparow, wynne!

Big hoorah! on the zucchini....you know by end of the season, you'll be gifting many friends, eh?

We're going to a hydroponic U pick farm tomorrow after church. Can't wait to see what they have growing. The list promised romaine, leaf, onion, peppers, strawberries and tomatoes. That may be the only way to grow in this heat down here...shaded and in water, no soil. I like it because it promises, no bending either.

Let me know how the violets fare at the daughter-in-law's. Funny I have a former sister in law and we still share new varieties when we find a really pretty one.

That's OK guys.. brag about your veggies! Next winter when your all froze up... I will, hopefully, be having my garden. Picked a better spot for it.. now looking for help to remove the sod. It is close to where I can irrigate! Son in law is putting in the little mister things for me... I still want to try the artichokes.. Anyone try growing them yet?

I envy you the zucchini , Ang.........I don't put in too many veggies............okay, I put in tomatoes, Swiss Chard and radishes (for John) and a green pepper....that's it!

I had to weed vegetable the entire time I was growing up..........I know I can't eat the flowers, but they sure give me a lot of pleasure. Probably should be putting in a few more veggies though!

Line......atrichokes........that is one thing I think I have never grown! Good luck with the new spot....you can tell us how it's doing while we all dream of warmer weather!

Line, the U-pick we are going to is....hang onto your hat....SHADED, and the plants are grown in buckets suspended from the ceiling. No soil, and the whole thing is cooled with giant fans. A giant greenhouse. They have school programs and do tours for growing hydroponically. It uses less water than traditional farming and even in the middle of summer we can get fresh veggies. So very unique. I'm so used to having the veggies trucked in from parts up north. They even sell kits. If I were flush, I might buy a kit to give it a try. All this sustainable farming and using local grown goods is the "rage" of the newspaper foodies around here. Have to check it out.

Pat, I'm with you on the weeding. That was my childhood chore until mom took out our veggie patch and put in the pool....now that was a swap from work to leisure!
