Saturday's Chickie Escape

  • MissouriFarmWife 8 years ago
Good morning. It is RAINING again and scheduled to follow the pattern of the last few days. Rain rain and rain again. NOT COMPLAINING. We need and are behind in annual rainfall. It does put a crimp in haying we wanted to do next week, however. Esp. if the ground is too soft, which with rain expected all weekend, it is likely!

Wayne’s buddy stopped by with a friend to see about buying some of last year’s hay. She needed just enough to do until her hay buying source had some available and was happy to get some. We can’t sell a lot but she figures that what he could part with would be O.K. for her to get two prone-to-founder horses out of the field and on hay and off of green grass for a while.

Changed chickies over to a new “home” - a water trough that has a hole in the seam, so is not so great for watering the horses any more! It makes a good chicken home for out one week old babies. They have hay in the bottom, fresh water and filled food dish. I may look for a better waterer - this is a royal pain and I’m sure there are better ones out there. One little one had its wing caught on a piece of tape we used to seal a crack in the cardboard temporary home, so Wayne had to gently free it. Hopefully it had only been caught a short time. Counted only 9 and looked in the old box, there was # 10 chickie all alone, so she was reunited. They have more room now and in a few weeks can be out and about in the coop with only the heat lamp to curl up under for warmth. We have a screen over it so no escapes will occur - they would not survive without extra warmth.

Feel free to start a new thread if you have pictures to upload, and just copy and paste this one.

Where is everyone today, Karen? I couldn't think of a thread title earlier. Glad to hear your little chicks are doing well and have graduated into a newer big home. We are supposed to get rain later on today. It is hot and very muggy here. We are also in need of precipitation and b/c it is so humid out, we have decided to hunker in with the A/C going today. Den did the grocery shopping and then mowed the lawn this morning and declared he wasn't going outside again today. Except to BBQ burgers if it isn't raining tonight. I might see if he can help me put some pictures back up on the walls. One of the spare bedrooms is cluttered and full of things to be put back in place. Oh well procrastination is my sin.

    Wishing everyone a great day!

We're on a Severe Thunderstorm watch here Karen but personally I don't believe it. It looked threatening when we were at the Farmer's Market but then we drove into town and it brightened up. A few drops on the way home and once we did arrive home we see we got a big heavy rainfall while we were gone but it has stopped. Sounds like the chicks are settling in.
It is hot and muggy here as well Joce. Made me think of Michelle B.'s humidity. :) Sounds like Den got a lot accomplished this morning. Yum on Burgers.
I didn't know what to make as I wasn't sure if I BBQ'd if I'd get rained out and if it was too hot I wouldn't want to turn the oven on. Since we have another Game 7 Hockey Game to watch this evening (Way to go Tampa!) I thought an appy dinner might be a good idea no matter the weather. I pulled out my old Pampered Chef Cut'n seal crimper and I'll make some little egg salad sandwich pouches. At the Market we bought a container of an African Peanut Soup, very yummy so we'll have that as well as a Thai mango salad that we also got at the Market (got some nice red and golden beets too!). Had lunch at the Farmer's Market at the Mexican booth. Jim got a Pork burrito and I got an open chicken quesadilla with a Strawberry Sunshine Fruit smoothie. :) Very yummy.
The little bumper that goes on the nose piece of Jim's eye glasses fell off yesterday so we went into Costco and they fixed them right up for him. Also stopped by Home Depot and Jim bought a Plum tree that he'd been eyeing up.
The purple plant I was talking about yesterday that the Hummingbird Moth came to visit is called setcreasea.

And knock on wood....I planted the two lavender plants in the Rockery yesterday and they haven't got eaten by anything yet. :)
Tina, are you feeling any better today? What did Liv bring you for dinner?

    Hello all,
The sun is peeking out today and starting to win in the battle with the clouds. I hope you get some relief from heat and humidity soon, Janet and Joce, and Karen that you get the rain you need and then some good drying weather for the haying. I am doing laundry and just hoping that the humidity stays down enough for it to dry. Last week it literally took days for the towels and heavier materials to dry and the bedding still feels damp at night.
I managed to pull the heads off my prawns and de-vein them yesterday and made garlic prawn "stuffed" avocados. I took some pictures while doing it so will try to post the recipe today. I also made a variation on a Puerto Rican plantain recipe with some green vudi I got at the market yesterday and will post that as well.
Tonight I will try doing the rest of the prawns steamed, with ginger, and some rice with carrots and onions as a side. It will be a bit of guessing as to what will go into it but I am getting there.
Hope everyone is having a great day. Wishing I could watch some hockey tonight too.

Getting some rain now and the power went out for a bit over an hour. Jim was freaking as he was worried we wouldn't be able to watch the Hockey Game tonight. :)
The prawns you got looked gorgeous Michelle B.! I make a recipe very similar to this one by Pat
    My Garlic Shrimp
that could totally have prawns subbed. Super easy, super tasty. I'm more of a garlic person than a ginger person. :) Prawn stuffed avocados sound wonderful. Can't wait to see a pic. Is it at all possible or horribly expensive to buy a Hockey channel there? I know my FIL buys a subscription to an NHL station when he winters in Texas so he can watch the Leafs. (Ugh) And I know the owner of the Sens, Eugene Melynk owns a bar in Barbados and somehow has the Hockey games beamed there. Also wanted to ask you about wine? LOL. Can you get a good selection there?

I think the garlic shrimp will work great with the prawns - going to keep that one on file for next time I get them. TV here is very limited and even satellite only offers a basic selection f channels. Guess all the "good" satellites are north of the equator lol. I should be able to get an NHL feed online somehow; I know I can get baseball that way so I am sure the NHL would have a subscription service too. This late in the year though I will likely have to wait for the new season to start before I can get it. Maybe I can get a game on one of the online internet feeds. I will go searching...

Procrastination is one my baddies also, Joce. The kittens are asleep beside me so it is easy to procrastinate. Boo on the storm watch, Janet...ours never materialized, ever. Deer have not bothered lavender plants, but they do chow down on tulips in the spring. We grilled pork ribs lat night. And may just do brats tonight. If the storms subside.

I need to download some photos and post them. Can not do that with the iPad yet -- operator head space. The avatar is my sister, two brothers, am myself. She is eleven years younger than I am.

    Have a nice afternoon.

I managed to get the recipe and pictures for the prawns posted - Stuffed Avocado With Garlic Prawns and I also found a source for the hockey game that has streaming live so I should be able to watch this afternoon. Next attempt will be to post the vudi recipe (that is what is on the plate next to the avocado/prawn dish).

Lol funny you should ask - I am cheering for being able to watch hockey. I also managed to post my vudi recipe - Fried Garlic Vudi although I really didn't taste much garlic in the whole thing.

The Vudi makes me slightly apprehensive. :) I'd try it. I'm cheering for Tampa overall but as for tonight's game I'm cheering for the Blackhawks. Hossa used to play for my Ottawa Sens and Toews is fun to watch.
