I used to make this with my girls when they were growing up all those many years ago. It was a nice quite fun time in the kitchen with everything set out on the table. Everyone was mixing and choosing their favorites!!!

Ingredients
  • 2 tsp. olive oil, any oil you want really, once we used coconut oil, it was great!
  • 1/2 tsp. beeswax
  • 1/2 tsp. cocoa butter, if using coconut oil this may not be necessary, just add this much more coconut oil
  • 1/2 tsp. honey
  • 3 drops essential oil of vanilla
  • 1 vitamin E capsule
  • OPTION: You can get those food grade colors, add them to just tint the gloss

Directions
  1. I put the first three (3) ingredients of this into a glass measuring cup.
  2. I place on low in the microwave, you need to stand right there, and nuke it. I check after every 5 seconds.
  3. Once melted stir in the honey, vanilla, and the Vitamin E!
  4. Stir once in a while until solid.
  5. And too make sure all of the honey is well mixed through out.
  6. Place into the containers you want it in.
  7. Label.

  9. Variations:
  10. Choose any essential oil that appeals to you. Orange, strawberry, even chocolate!
  11. ~
  12. Tea Tree oil is good for cold sores and chapped lips. But it is hard to handle the taste, so be careful on how much you add!
  13. ~
  14. Make your lip balm using an herbal oil in place of the olive oil.
  15. Lemon Balm and Calendula are two of many herbs that can add healing and soothing properties.
  16. ~
  17. Alkanet will make red lip balm.
  18. Start with one tablespoon to 1/2 cup oil.
  19. After heat extraction, check the color.
  20. If it is not dark enough for you add more Alkanet and go through the heat extraction process again.
  21. Your lip balm will turn out several shades lighter than the color of your oil.

  23. This is how my friend makes it:
  24. Measure oil, beeswax and cocoa butter into a glass or enamel pan.
  25. Melt over low heat.
  26. A hotplate works well and reduces the risk of overheating the oils.
  27. I use a small glass jar to store my lip balm in so I just mix all the ingredients right in that jar then place it in a pan of water to melt the waxes.
  28. Stir the mixture often until the wax is melted.
  29. Remove from heat and stir in the honey and essential oil.
  30. Pinch open the vitamin E capsule and squeeze the contents into the mixture.
  31. Stir well.
  32. Pour the mixture into containers.
  33. Label after it has solidified.
  34. If you want your honey to be dispersed throughout the lip balm you will need to stir it as it is solidifying.
