How to make it

  • 1)Preheat oven to 350. Spray an 8” square baking pan with non-stick cooking spray.
  • 2)In a medium bowl, whisk together whole-wheat flour, all-purpose, zest, ginger, cinnamon, baking powder, baking soda, salt and pepper.
  • 3)In a larger bowl with electric electric mixer on high speed, beat sugar, margarine and applesauce until smooth. Add buttermilk and egg whites; beat until combined. Reduce speed to low; gradually add flour mixture until blended.
  • 4)Spoon batter into prepared pan. Bake 25 – 30 minutes, until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool completely on wire rack before cutting into 6 equal bars.

  • 5)These can be topped with Confectioners sugar sprinkled on the top or can be frosted with a low calorie frosting.
