Ingredients
  • 6 to 6 1/2 cups sifted flour
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 6 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 yeast cakes or 2 packages dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup warm milk
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 2 sticks butter or margarine, melted or very soft
  • 3 eggs, beaten
  • Nut Filling Recipe:
  • 1 to 2 pounds ground nuts
  • (about 1 1/2 pounds walnuts or 3/4 pounds pecans)
  • 2 1/2 cups sugar
  • 2 sticks butter or margarine melted
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 large apple grated
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • Combine all ingredients except the butter.
  • Now that you have done that, add the melted butter and mix well.
  • Heat in large saucepan until the ingredients blend well and thicken slightly.
  • Spread on rolled dough after the mixture has cooled.
  • This makes more filling than needed for the above nut rolls.
  • You can freeze any extra and use as a topping for an apple pie or
  • coffee cake recipes and baked apples.

Directions
  1. Dissolve yeast in milk.
  2. Combine the rest of the ingredients;
  3. add yeast and milk mixture, blending very well.
  4. Divide dough into four or six parts depending on length of nut roll
  5. Roll about 1/4 inch thick, spread with nut filling (recipe above) and roll up jelly roll fashion.
  6. Let rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  7. Bake in 350 degree oven for 30 to 40 minutes.
  8. Makes four large or six medium rolls.
  9. You can freeze the rest or give to friends.

:) Thank you for this - my intuition is that this is wonderful. I'm looking forward to it!

It is great, your recipe made my day. My family loves it, making the queen of our kitchen.

I've got this one bookmarked to make when the weather cools off. Sounds wonderful.

I love the addition of the apples. Perfect for autumn!

Your finished ones look just like my grandmother's! And I love the idea of apricots instead of raisins. Thanks for sharing!

Looks delicious. I love to bake. Will try it soon. :)

The are two slight variations that I always make. One uses a combination of sugar, cinamon, and golden raisins as the filling. The other is essentially the same as your recipie (sugar, ground walnuts, and golden raisins) minus the grated apple.

P.S. I've used regular raisins in a pinch, and honestly didn't notice a difference. But golden raisins are what my mom & grandma always used...

Yes you are right...I use the golden raisins too....alot of people do not like the raisins so I left it out...but it can be added...or if people do not like the raisins at all...I just add chopped up apricots..they make it taste heavenly.

Great recipe! My family also uses golden raisins, but we put it in the dough. This helps keep moist, and prevents it from drying out.
