Fried Okra

- 1 pound sliced okra-fresh or frozen(thaw first) shopping list
- 2 eggs beaten shopping list
- 1 cup buttermilk shopping list
- 1 cup self-rising flour shopping list
- 1 cup cornmeal shopping list
- 2 teaspoons salt-or to taste shopping list
- 2 teaspoons black pepper-or to taste shopping list
- 2 teaspoons garlic powder-or to taste shopping list
- 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper-or to taste shopping list
- oil- vegetable, corn, peanut, or canola shopping list
How to make it
- Combine buttermilk and eggs in a medium sized mixing bowl.
- Add sliced okra and let stand for 10 minute.
- In a separate bowl, combine flour, cornmeal, salt, pepper, garlic, and cayenne. Mix well.
- Using a large slotted spoon, dredge okra in small amounts until all are coated.
- Pour about 2 inches of oil into a dutch oven or deep cast iron skillet. Heat oil to 350 degrees.
- Add okra. Let fry for at least two minutes before agitating or breading will fall off.
- Fry until golden brown. Drain on paper towels.
- Season with additional salt if desired.
- Serve hot with a dipping sauce or plain.
- Suggestion:
- Combine 1/2 cup ranch dressing and 1-2 teaspoons horseradish for a tasty dipping sauce with kick.
