How to make it

  • Preheat oven to 325 degrees
  • Grease one 10 inch tube pan
  • Mix together the flour, baking soda, and salt
  • Set aside.
  • In a large bowl, beat butter with sugar until light and fluffy
  • Mix in the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition
  • Stir in the lemon and vanilla extracts
  • Gently add flour mixture alternately with the buttermilk.
  • Pour batter into the prepared pan.
  • Bake in preheated oven for 90 minutes
  • Do not open oven door until after one hour
  • When cake begins to pull away from the side of the pan, it is done. Let cook in pan for 10 minutes
  • Turn out onto a wire rack and cool completely.
  • *** You may use self rising flour but you MUST eliminate the baking soda and reduce salt to 1/4 teaspoons.

    clbacon, thank you for the nice compliment. MOST of the time I do NOT frost my pound cakes. These pictures reflect 2 different cakes. One was baked and left plain as we prefer it; the other, got the leftover frosting in my freezer. The cake is gorgeous with fresh strawberries atop the frosting. Didn't have any berries or anything else to decorate the cake so had to leave it with just frosting. Boo hoo.

    annieamie, thank you! When I bake a pound cake in a tube pan, instead of prepping the pan with butter and flour, I use butter and sugar! It makes it easier to get out of the pan; I've never had one "stick" using this method. I usually brush off the sugar but this time it formed a perfect ring around the cake and I decided to leave it. Don't fix what isn't broken kinda thing.

    That's one pretty pound cake! How did you get the circle of sugar around the outter upper portion of the cake? Thanks so much for sharing your recipe. I'm sure it tastes as great as it looks!
