One of Great Aunt Mabel's favored ways to serve okra. She always had tomatoes growing and she made wonderful stewed tomatoes. This was a dish to fix when she didn't feel like frying. The bacon fat makes the dish "sing".

This is a good old Southern recipe and it actually has a name "Stewed okra and tomatoes." Just a comment. The okra takes longer to cook than the tomatoes, so most recipes use fresh or canned tomatoes that aren't stewed and let them cook with the okra. You can even buy this stuff in cans at the grocery, but it won't be anywhere near as good as this recipe, especially with the bacon fat.

This sounds like something I would definitely love - since my first taste of "cornmeal-and-seasoned-white-flour-breaded" fried okra when we moved to Missouri in '76, I've been in love. This has got to be good - I'm lovin' your Great Aunt Mabel!!

I'll be making this Thursday, I hope my Southern husband likes a southern dish made by a crazy Californian!
