How to make it

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly spray or grease a cookie sheet.
  • Sift together the flour, baking soda, cream of tartar, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, ground cloves, brown sugar, and almonds in a large bowl.
  • Add the butter and cut into the flour mixture.
  • Add the beaten eggs and port and mix dough together until it can be formed into a ball.
  • Roll dough into walnut-sized balls and place on cookie sheets about 2" apart.
  • Bake for 12-15 minutes - until golden brown. Remove to a rack to cool completely.

    I whipped up a batch of these last night as I had most of the ingredients on hand. They are delightful. I love traditional dutch biscuits so these were perfect. I didn't have any buckwheat though so I used some chickpea flour for extra 'depth' that I had left over from my Rose of Jericho cake :) Thanks for yet another great post.
