This dish is a real crowd pleaser on our family camping trips, there are never any left-overs and everyone always asks for the recipe. It even inspired a friend to purchase his own dutch oven.

Ingredients
  • 6 jumbo cans of sliced peaches in heavy syrup; drain only 3 cans
  • 2 boxes of white or vanilla cake mix
  • 1 stick of butter

Directions
  1. A cast Iron dutch oven is ESSENTIAL for this recipe, nothing else works.
  2. Layer 1: Drain 3 cans of peaches and put in cast iron dutch oven
  3. Add 3 more cans of peaches, do not drain liquid, to the dutch oven
  4. Layer 2: Pour both boxes of cake mix over the top of peaches (do not stir)
  5. Layer 3: Slice up one stick of butter into little pats and drop all over the top of cake mix
  6. Put the lid on the dutch oven and put in the campfire, near hot coals, not on the hot coals.
  7. Place hot coals on top of the dutch oven lid. VERY IMPORTANT.
  8. In about 20 minutes, give the dutch oven a 180 degree turn, to insure an even bake.
  9. In about 20 more minutes, check under the lid.
  10. Dessert is finished when peaches are soft and carmelized, juice will really thicken, you will have a hot, bubbly , golden brown, topping.
  11. Don't let the dutch oven turn all glowy red, it'll burn

I've got this recipe saved for the next camping trip with the grandkids. Thanks for a great post. :)

I don't get to camp out much so i will try this next time i have a bbq...looks good and thanks.

This Looks Great....I'll have to give it a go...
Thanks for keeping it simple!!

This looks wonderful! I've often made cakes/puddings in the dutch oven, but I rarely remember what exactly I did since it's generally after a few beers. Next trip I'll come armed with your recipe!

Great recipe going to try this one.We go camping with 5 other familys every summer and we are always looking for new recipes to try on the fire!!Thumbs up to you TY

This looks awsome! I can see you like to cook with cast iron. I'm a huge fan of cast iron cooking, althougth I havent done much duch oven cooking. Anyway this recipe looks great!

Just what I've been looking for!! I'll definitely be trying this one at the next camping trip. I was looking for cake, but this sounds even better.

I have this as one of my must-tries for our camping trip next week. I'd gotten this recipe online (not doubled- but that's a good tip!). It's so nice that you have a picture.

I want to thank you for giving such specific details in the directions!

We made this. It wowed the campers for sure! I made half the recipe but used the whole stick of butter.

I had an aluminum Dutch oven given to me by my grandmother. It's rather thick. I lined it with the foil as another recipe listed. I also sat it on the coals with coals on the lid. It still took about 35-40 minutes to cook. It turned out great. We want to do it again sometime, maybe even at home at our next bon fire!

This sounds wonderful! This was recommended by Dynie. We are avid campers and she highly recommended this. I am wheat intolerant and don't know how this will come out with GF cake mix but will let ya know!

I think the boys in Yellowstone will appreciate this as the 'coup d'etat' on Father's Day..... I will probably try it in my backyard before heading to the woods, just to ensure success !!!

Great looking recipe....

P.S. This would go well with my dessert coffee, but we MUST prevent Forest Fires '-)

This recipe originally called for one box of cake mix, but people tended to gobble up the topping pretty quickly, leaving nothing but nekked peaches in the bottom of the dutch oven. So I added another box.

we just got back from a camping trip and instead of using 6 29oz cans of pears we used one of those 120 oz cans from smart and final and added a huge container of fresh blueberries. AMAZING COBBLER!!
