How to make it

  • Scrub potatoes.
  • Cut larger potatoes into quarters.
  • Place in steamer basket over boiling water then cover and steam for 15 minutes.
  • In medium saucepan cook onion in butter until onion is tender but not brown.
  • Add flour and stir until smooth.
  • Stir in salt, pepper, cloves, nutmeg and bay leaf.
  • Add milk all at once.
  • Cook and stir until thickened and bubbly.
  • Stir in Gruyere and Parmesan cheeses.
  • Heat and stir until cheeses melt then remove from heat and discard bay leaf.

    Very tasty delicate dish. The cloves taste is a standout in the sauce. Almost forgot to stir in the cheese. The sauce tastes good without it.
