Ingredients
  • 1/4 cup butter or margarine
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar
  • 1/2 cup freshly grated parmesan cheese
  • 5 cups (about 5 med) peeled, sliced, raw potatoes
  • 1/4 cup dry bread crumbs
  • 1 Tbs. melted butter or margarine
  • .

Directions
  1. Heat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. In med. saucepan, melt margarine, stir in flour and salt. Add milk, cook until mixture boils and thickens, stirring constantly. Stir in cheeses and potatoes.
  3. Pour into a 2 qt casserole or individual casserole dishes. Combine bread crumbs and melted margarine/butter, sprinkle over potatoes.
  4. Bake covered for 1 to 1 1/2 hours or until bubbly and potatoes tender.
  5. Garnish with chopped chives if desired.

IF YOU WANT TO MAKE THESE POTATOS REALLY DECADENT SUBSTITUTE HEAVY WHIPPING CREAM FOR THE MILK....YIKES...SO GOOD

I made this tonight for dinner it was a BIG hit. My husband loved it! I did use one cup of heavy whipping cream and one cup of whole milk. I will try it with just whole milk next time to see if there is a differance. Thanks for the recipe...yummy!


A great version of one of my all time favourites. Will try it this weekend. Very nice with the parmesan.


This is just like my recipe except I've never added parmesan. Sounds delicious!

Alterations


I use a recipe almost like this ... We add parsley and chives on top and we put in a throw away foil pan, cover with foil and bake on the gas grill out side. Let cook the last few minutes without top... awesome!
