If you have dark carpets, vinegar can sometimes bleach darker carpets, so do test this formula on a small hidden portion of your carpet. Also I have a recipe that uses no vinegar too I will post in my group.

Ingredients
  • 1/2 gallon hot water
  • 2 tbsp castile liquid soap or dish soap like Seventh Generation
  • 1/4 cup of vinegar
  • 6-7 drops rosemary essential oil
  • 4 drops lemon essential oil

Directions
  1. Combine ingredients in bucket. Bring along another bucket filled with hot water too, so you can rinse off the rag into this bucket, that way you don't cross contaminate.
  2. Dip your rag into your solution, squeeze out excess liquid as you never want to saturate your carpet, and wipe and blot gently over your carpet area you are cleaning. Never scrub, as this will cause the stain/smell to penetrate even deeper into your carpet fibers.
  3. Keep rinsing your rag/cloth into the hot water bucket to rinse off the grime, then again into the vinegar mixture.
  4. When done, get a clean dry towel and blot the area with it. If the odor was bad, I suggest sprinkling a layer of baking soda on top of the area and letting sit for a few hours, then start again. Let dry and vacuum. Good as new.

Very nice....good advice too! Vinegar has so many great uses - especially perfect in a 50-50 ratio with water to remove pet stains and smell for no repeated oopsies! I am saving this - thank you Ichef! - I also added it to the Tips & Advice group along with giving it the rating it deserves!
