How to make it

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees
  • Place a 10 inch cast iron skillet in oven for 15 minutes to preheat
  • Sift together flour, 3/4 cup of the sugar, cocoa, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl
  • Add milk, 3 tablespoons of the butter and vanilla stirring until smooth
  • Set this mixture aside
  • Combine 1 1/3 cups of sugar and water in a small saucepan.
  • Bring this to a boil, stirring to dissolve sugar
  • Remove from heat
  • Place 1 tablespoon melted butter in prepared skillet to coat skillet
  • really well
  • Add batter, spreading evenly over pan
  • Pour water mixture over batter, do not stir
  • mixture will bubble
  • Bake for 28 to 30 minutes or until cake is set
  • Let stand 10 minutes before serving
  • Bake at 375 degrees

    This is my favorite childhood dessert but, I thought it was an old Mid-western creation. LOL
    Actually in my family it comes from Germany.

    Oh my oh my....can't wait to give this one a try. BTW....I think cast iron skillets are always best to cook with.
