How to make it

  • Cream butter and sugar in a large bowl.
  • Add molasses, spices and brandy and mix until combined.
  • In another bowl, beat eggs until they are thick and then beat into butter mixture.
  • Add cream of tartar and baking soda to flour, then add flour mixture to butter mixture alternately with milk, combining well after each addition.
  • Grate the colored peel from the orange and add to batter.
  • Squeeze juice from orange and mix into batter.
  • Add raisins if desired.
  • Pour batter into a greased 9" x 13" pan.
  • Bake for 30 minutes in a preheated 350 degree oven, or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.
  • Cool slightly then serve.
