Elegant Thick French Toast Recipe

The wonderful cookbook The Silver Palate has an over-the-top French toast recipe. I have made these more than a few times, and the results are fantastic. The triple sec and orange zest add a fresh zing to these beauties.

Ingredients
  • 5 eggs
  • Vegetable Oil for your skillet
  • 2/3 cup half and half
  • 1/3 cup Triple Sec
  • Finely grated zest of 1 orange
  • 2 teaspoons of cinnamon
  • 8 thick slices of day-old bread, better if slightly stale.. (Texas Toast white bread works great)
  • Maple syrup (Warmed)
  • Fresh berries ( Optional)
  • Butter
  • Powdered Sugar (of Course)

Directions
  1. Beat eggs and milk together. Add the Triple Sec, orange zest, and cinnamon. Whisk until well blended. Pour into a shallow bowl.
  2. Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture, allowing bread to soak up some of the mixture. Melt some butter (or use vegetable oil) over a skillet on medium high heat. Add as many slices of bread onto the skillet as will fit at a time. Fry until brown on both sides, flipping the bread when necessary.
  3. Serve hot with butter, maple syrup, and Thick Smoked Bacon.
  4. Fresh Berries on the side..
  5. Enjoy

Ah, yes. Very nice and elegant not to mention delicious and lovely! (Can you tell I like french toast?)

WOW! This sounds awesome! :) TY! :) My Mom used to put orange juice with the egg for French toast---it was really good, too! Hope you have a good day, Marky! :)

Wow, this sounds sooooooooo good, great post, you got my 5.

I LOVE Silver Palate's cookbook - great recipe...the Triple Sec would lend a great "fruity" flavor - can't wait to try this one. I have left over Italian bread from dinner tonight...I think I better slice it and freeze it until the weekend, JUST for this - perfect!

Great recipe! This all sounds so delicious and I look forward to sliding a piece of this right into my mouth soon! Yum! Thanks for the recipe!

How beautiful and delicious this is. I can't wait to try taste it. Great job, Marky - thanks so much!

Oh my! How decadent. Can't wait for the weekend.
