Onion Pie Recipe

Onion Pie Recipe
When Vidalia onions appear at our markets in the early Spring, I rush home to make this pie. You can omit the crust for less carbs, and it freezes beautifully.

Ingredients
  • 1 pound thinly sliced Vidalia onions
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • ½ cup sour cream
  • dash each of: salt, pepper, garlic and Tabasco
  • 1 cup grated gruyere cheese
  • 1 pie crust (I usually use the refrigerated crusts)
  • ¼ cup fresh grated parmesan cheese

Directions
  1. In a large skillet, sauté sliced onions in butter until nicely golden. In bowl, mix together eggs, sour cream and seasonings; add egg mixture to sautéd onions. Add gruyere cheese and gently stir mixture to blend ingredients. Pour into a 10-inch glass pie plate lined with a pie crust (I like to pre-bake my crust for 8 minutes at 350 degrees before adding the filling). Top quiche with the parmesan cheese. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes; reduce heat to 325 degrees and bake another 15 minutes.
  2. Note: if you omit the pie crust, just pour the filling into a well buttered 10-inch glass pie plate as bake as directed.

I AM AN ONION ADDICT, SO I KNOW I WILL ENJOY THIS DISH

I love onions and especially Vidalias. Hello neighbor!

This looks terrific!

This is one of my favorite recipes, Mom! And it's so versatile; you can really use anything in place of the Vidalias. And if you are eating on a low carb plan, you can just omit the crust, and it's every bit as good.

This sounds great. Time for me to break out the Vidalia's and try. Thanks for the share!

This sounds wonderful ! I also make an onion pie but I use brown sugar in it. My brother LOVES it and he doesn't even LIKE onions ! Might try to slide this one in him, too. ;o)

My favorite onion pie ever and I'm so with you on the refrigerated crusts. I used to rave about mom's crust and she would labor over them every year and then one year after a particularly wonderful piece of pie, she pulled me aside and confessed it was P*******Y! I was so shocked.

Love this can hardly wait to bit into it.

Sounds great. It has been added to my "must try" list. By the way, within the past year our local markets have begun to sell "sweet onions" all-year-round. They don't call them Vidalias, but they sure look and taste like them.

I have never tried a onion pie. It sounds good. I will let cha know how it turns out!
