How to make it

  • In food processor or mixer bowl combine flour sugar and cornstarch for pastry.
  • Add butter and process until dough holds together then divide into thirds.
  • Roll out two thirds of dough on a baking sheet to reach all corners evenly.
  • Prick with fork then bake at 350 for 15 minutes.
  • Roll out remaining dough between plastic wrap to rectangle about half the size of baking sheet. Cut into long strips about 1/4" wide.
  • Combine eggs, brown sugar, juices, lemon peel and vanilla for filling in food processor.
  • Blend well then add figs, dates and nuts and process until evenly minced.
  • Spread filling over baked pastry and top with strips of dough criss-crossing diagonally.
  • Return to oven and bake 30 minutes then cool and cut into small bars.
