Ingredients

How to make it

  • Beat the cake mix, butter and egg together in a mixing bowl.
  • Pat into bottom of Pan, 9x 13 inches
  • Beat together the topping ingredients.
  • Pour over cake mix.
  • Heat oven to 325*. Bake for 45 minutes to 1 hour until golden brown.
  • Can be sprinkled with powdered sugar over the top after it cools. You can also experiment with other cake flavors. However the lady who gave me this recipe said Chocolate cake mix does not taste good.

Totally a MO thing. We made this as kids, just made it again for the first time in 25 years. Everyone loved it. Thanks for the refresher!

The lemon version of this cake is FABULOUS. I love the chewy gooey texture, especially the edge pieces!

This is in the oven right now. I used a lemon cake mix and added 1 tsp of lemon extract to the topping. MMMMMMMMMMMM We're having a potluck this week and it's so hot that I thought this and a strawberry cake would be lovely and summery.

OMG! Our secret is out! This is a St. Louis, MO thing (along w/ pork steaks and toasted ravioli) Don't ever buy this cake - commerical versions are ick. I love this dessert - easy to make and always a hit. When I make it, I make 1 1/2 times the topping and then cook it a bit longer. I'd give this a 10 if I could.

This looks like a great cake. I will have to send this recipe to my daughter with 3 small children. (the oldest one is 3!) It will not be quite as messy as a cake with frosting but I don't think the frosting will be missed.
    Thanks, Ferri

So THIS is the "gooey bars" you mentioned! I've seen this recipe, but never tried it, so I'm glad you taste-tested it for me!!! I trust your opinion, so I will be making this one - it DOES sound gooey and rich and delicious and ALL the things I love about sweets...and so easy to throw together besides. I'm lovin' it (sorry McD's!)...Krum
