Herman Sourdough Starter

- 2 1/4 tsp. active dry yeast shopping list
- 2 cups warm water (110*) shopping list
- 2 cups flour shopping list
- 1/4 cup sugar shopping list

- Divided: shopping list
- 1 cup sugar shopping list
- 2 cups flour shopping list
- 2 cups milk shopping list
How to make it
- In a large glass or plastic container, dissolve the yeast in warm water. Stir in the flour and sugar, mix until smooth. (Use a wooden spoon)! Cover loosely and store in a warm place overnight.
- Day 1: Stir once and refrigerate.
- Day 2: Stir once
- Day 3: Stir once
- Day 4: Stir once
- Day 5: Stir, then divide in half. give half away with feeding insructions. Feed starter with 1/2 cup sugar, 1 cup flour and 1 cup milk. Stir until smooth. Cover and place in refrigerator.
- Day 6: Stir once
- Day 7: Stir once
- Day 8: Stir once
- Day 9: Stir once
- Day 10: Feed again with 1/ 2 cup sugar, 1 cup flour and 1 cup milk. Stir until smooth. Cover and return to the refrigerator.
- Day 11: Stir once
- Day 12: Stir once
- Day 13: Stir once
- Day 14: Stir once
- Day 15: it is ready to be used for baking! Reserve 1 cup of the starter in the refrigerator and continue to follow the stir and feed cycle (Stir once a day for 4 days, Stir and feed on the fifth day, ready to use on the tenth day)

Man, I remember my mom having this out on the kitchen counter back in the 70's I believe it was - SO popular back then, and made the best darn bread and pancakes...thanks for the memories, and the post, cheryl!
