Herman Sourdough Starter Recipe
This is a recipe for a sweet sourdough. I have posted a few recipes that include this recipe as one of the ingredients

Ingredients
  • 2 1/4 tsp. active dry yeast
  • 2 cups warm water (110*)
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • -------------------------
  • Ingredients to feed starter:
  • Divided:
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 cups milk

Directions
  1. In a large glass or plastic container, dissolve the yeast in warm water. Stir in the flour and sugar, mix until smooth. (Use a wooden spoon)! Cover loosely and store in a warm place overnight.
  2. Day 1: Stir once and refrigerate.
  3. Day 2: Stir once
  4. Day 3: Stir once
  5. Day 4: Stir once
  6. Day 5: Stir, then divide in half. give half away with feeding insructions. Feed starter with 1/2 cup sugar, 1 cup flour and 1 cup milk. Stir until smooth. Cover and place in refrigerator.
  7. Day 6: Stir once
  8. Day 7: Stir once
  9. Day 8: Stir once
  10. Day 9: Stir once
  11. Day 10: Feed again with 1/ 2 cup sugar, 1 cup flour and 1 cup milk. Stir until smooth. Cover and return to the refrigerator.
  12. Day 11: Stir once
  13. Day 12: Stir once
  14. Day 13: Stir once
  15. Day 14: Stir once
  16. Day 15: it is ready to be used for baking! Reserve 1 cup of the starter in the refrigerator and continue to follow the stir and feed cycle (Stir once a day for 4 days, Stir and feed on the fifth day, ready to use on the tenth day)

Man, I remember my mom having this out on the kitchen counter back in the 70's I believe it was - SO popular back then, and made the best darn bread and pancakes...thanks for the memories, and the post, cheryl!

This sounds interesting I never used sugar in a sour dough recipe before.

Idk, I see these long, long, really long recipes that go on for days and it seems a little daunting and yet I am sooooo intrigued by how it will turn out. Have you seen the friendship cake recipe? If you google it and give it a read, you would think that you are creating hooch instead of a cake. Try it and thanks for the post and challenge.
