This always comes out light and flakey, even the scraps when you re-roll them. The oats give a slight nutty flavor to the pastry but are not obvious.

Ingredients
  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 tablespoon nonfat dry milk powder
  • 1/4 cup quick-cooking oats
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 8 - 10 tablespoons ice water; or more as needed

Directions
  1. Mix the dry ingredients together in a large bowl.
  2. Cut in the shortening until the size of peas.
  3. Mix in the water a tablespoon at a time with a fork until the dough comes together.
  4. This recipe takes a bit more water than standard pastry because the oats absorb some water.
  5. Divide the dough in half and form each into a 1/2 inch thick disk, wrap each half in plastic and chill before rolling.
  6. Makes enough for a 10-inch double crust pie.
  7. NOTES : If desired, may add 1 tablespoon grated orange rind with the dry ingredients.

I have not made pastry, adding the oatmeal, different,thank-you for the post.

This is different w/ the oats...I think I'll give it a try. Thanks! :)

Testing out this pie crust now. In the fridge chilling. Forgot to add the orange rind. Maybe next time. Also put the shortening in the freezer for several hours to firm it up and make it more workable cutting it into the flour mix. Using butter flavored Crisco.

This is a great crust. Thanks. I'll try to remember to put the orange rind in next time.

Thanks for recommending this! I will definitely give it a try! :)
