  • The Mix (Homemade INSTEAD of bought biscuit Substitute)
  • This recipe is in response to a discussion about Bisquick subs.

  • ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  • 18 cups flour
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 4 2/3 cups powdered milk
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 2/3 cup baking powder
  • 2 cups shortening
  • 1 cup applesauce (**to cut down on fats used!**:)
  • **may use more shortening (if desired)**
  • 2 sticks butter (NOT margarine)

Directions
  1. In a VERY large pan, stir the dry milk, baking powder, sugar and salt into the flour; mix thoroughly.
  2. Cut the shortening, butter, and applesauce into the dry ingredients until the MIX is the consistency of corn meal.
  3. Place the mix in a covered glass or plastic container and keep in refrigerator or freezer! (must be kept DRY also).
  4. Use within a month from refrigerator or may keep for several months in the freezer.
  5. To make the biscuits: (makes 8-10 biscuits)

  7. To measure, pile the MIX lightly into a cup and level off with a spatula or the back of a knife.

  9. 2 cups of the mix
  10. Preheat oven to 425.
  11. Stir in just enough milk or buttermilk to form a soft dough.
  12. Knead and handle as little as possible.(important!)
  13. Roll out into floured board and cut into 2 inch rounds.
  14. Bake for 10-13 minutes.

  16. Should make about 12 batches (of 8-10 biscuits each)

Thanks so much for sharing. I have been looking for a good biscuit recipe. I am so tired of buying canned biscuits to bake and discovering afterwards I got rolls instead. Great way to ruin planned strawberry shortcake. Going to check out more of your recipes.

it is a filler for some of the excess FAT..it is
to cut the fat!! Thanks KNOX!! :)


I DEFINATELY think this recipe should be cut in half..also have asked and will work great with half whole wheat..so getting even healthier!! :()
