Ingredients
  • 1-1/2 cups honey
  • 3 cups water
  • 4-6 cloves
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 4 inch vanilla bean pod, leave whole
  • freshly grated nutmeg
  • 2 - 3 inch pieces of lemon peel, zest - no pith(white part)
  • 2 - 1 inch pieces of orange peel, zest - no pith(white part)
  • 3 cups Vodka - Use Lukosowa or Monopolowa potato Vodka or Rodnik grain Vodka. If you can't find those particular Vodka's, any Vodka will do ;)
  • Note: The above ingredients can be doubled or tripled - depends on you.

Directions
  1. Heat the honey, water and spices in a saucepan and bring to a boil.
  2. Watch the saucepan very carefully so that it does not boil over.
  3. Place lid on the saucepan and turn off the heat.
  4. Allow to steep for at least half an hour.
  5. Add the vodka to the saucepan and turn up heat to warm the liquid.
  6. Strain and serve hot.
  7. Makes 4-6 glasses depending on the size of the glasses and how much everyone is enjoying it.
  8. I like to place a zest of lemon or orange peel in each drink.
  9. This recipe may be made in advance and reheated. It keeps very well if strained and decanted.
  10. Note: I love history and I am adding this bit of info.
  11. Legend has it that the recipe was created by the Benedictine monks at a monastery in Niaśviž which was founded by Mikołaj Krzysztof "Sierotka" Radziwiłł. Known in Poland and Lithuania at least since 16th century, it soon became popular among the szlachta of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. There are numerous recipes preserved to our times in countless szlachta diaries. Krupnikas was also used as a common medicinal disinfectant to Polish soldiers in World War II.
