How to make it

  • Peel, then chop up the apples. Put the lard in a large pot. Add onions and cook on medium heat until browned. Add shredded cabbage, apples, vinegar, white wine, sugar, salt, cloves, and bay leaf in that order. Bring to a boil. Cover and simmer on low heat for two to three hours. If there is too much liquid, add a little bit of cornstarch to make it thicker.

This is one my all time favorites. I ate this all of the time as a kid. The only thing I do different when making mine is I use bacon, fry it up crisp and then use the bacon grease to cook with and then add the crispy bacon at the end. But I love bacon.

Oh this sounds really good. My husband doesn't care for it so once a year or so I buy that stuff in a jar. Although I'll have to cut the recipe in half, I'll have to give this a try soon. Peg
