How to make it

  • Rise time not included
  • In a large bowl, mix the yeast, cardamom and 2 cups flour.
  • In a saucepan, heat the milk, butter, sugar and salt to 120 degrees to 130 degrees.
  • Add the dry ingredients.
  • Add the eggs, zest and orange juice.
  • Beat on low speed with a hand mixer for 30 seconds.
  • Beat on high for 3 minutes.
  • By hand, stir in 2 more cups flour, turn out on a floured board and knead until smooth, adding more flour as needed.
  • Place in a greased bowl, cover and allow to rise until doubled in size.
  • Punch it down, and divide in half. Divide each half into thirds. Shape into 6 balls, cover and let rise for 10 minutes. Roll each ball into a 16-inch rope, braid loosely and place on a greased cookie sheet. Cover, and let rise until doubled.
  • Brush with the yolk and milk mixture.
  • Makes 2 loaves
  • long or round
  • Bake 25-30 minutes at 350 degrees.

    You made my favorite bread of all time.
    No more has to be said about a perfect loaf of bread. This Crusty Braided Cardamon Bread is top of the line. Just inhale the beautiful aroma Mmmmmmm.
