Crusty Braided Cardamon Bread

- 2 packages dry yeast shopping list
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom shopping list
- 5-51/2 cups flour shopping list
- 1 cup milk shopping list
- 1/2 cup butter shopping list
- 1/2 cup sugar shopping list
- 1 teaspoon salt shopping list
- 2 eggs shopping list
- 1 tablespoon orange zest shopping list
- 1/3 cup orange juice shopping list
- 1 egg yolk shopping list
- 1 tablespoon milk shopping list
How to make it
- Rise time not included
- In a large bowl, mix the yeast, cardamom and 2 cups flour.
- In a saucepan, heat the milk, butter, sugar and salt to 120 degrees to 130 degrees.
- Add the dry ingredients.
- Add the eggs, zest and orange juice.
- Beat on low speed with a hand mixer for 30 seconds.
- Beat on high for 3 minutes.
- By hand, stir in 2 more cups flour, turn out on a floured board and knead until smooth, adding more flour as needed.
- Place in a greased bowl, cover and allow to rise until doubled in size.
- Punch it down, and divide in half. Divide each half into thirds. Shape into 6 balls, cover and let rise for 10 minutes. Roll each ball into a 16-inch rope, braid loosely and place on a greased cookie sheet. Cover, and let rise until doubled.
- Brush with the yolk and milk mixture.
- Makes 2 loaves
- long or round
- Bake 25-30 minutes at 350 degrees.
