How to make it

  • Sautee the onion in frying pan or pot with the butter until translucent.
  • Remove from pan/pot and put to the side
  • Crumble ground beef into pan/pot and cook until all fat is rendered
  • Drain fat from ground beef
  • Add onion back to drained beef
  • Sprinkle the flour, garlic powder, salt & pepper over the ground beef
  • Stir until all are absorbed into the meat
  • Add evaporated milk and allow to simmer until of desired consistency/thickness.
  • If too thick, add a little more evaporated milk OR chicken broth
  • Serve over toast or biscuits or bread of your choice

I've never had this, but it sounds delicious. I could even make it lowfat(which is the way I have to cook) by using lean ground beef and skim evaporated milk. Can't wait to try it...thanks and HAPPY NEW YEAR!

No matter what type of meat you use (chipped, ground, etc.) it still comes out looking like its title. LOL

I LOVE SOS! My dad always made it too! He made it with sausage too for a wonderful sausage gravy with biscuits. Mmmmmmmmmm! My kids even love this!

Yeah, that was something that was always around in my house growing up (canned chipped beef). My mother used to put the chipped beef into country gravy and pour it over biscuits or mashed potatoes. :o)
