London Broil With Peppercorn And Garlic Marinade

This is a delicious marinade. You can't detect coffee flavor, it is just a rich deep flavor. The crushed peppercorns and garlic add just enough flavor to the meat, but it isn't too intense for the pepper shy hubby. Very good stuff. I marinated some strip steaks instead of a London Broil, grilled them rare-medium rare and it was declared good and "make this again" by Fred. Yahoo. Nice job, Corinne.

I am going to try this on my next London Broil. I've never thought of using coffee in a marinade. How long did you marinade? n Cool avatar

I let it marinade overnight for London Broil but Notyourmomma may not have for so long...Thanks so much for the interest in this recipe, Mrpiggy. I know another member made it last night and she and her husband thought it a little too sweet for their taste but would make it again using less sugar. You may want to take that into consideration if thinking of making it.

I dont see it being sweet. Not for me anyway. I've used more brown sugar then that on L/B's before. Im going to try it as is and let is marinade for a day also. Im looking forward to seeing what effect the coffee has. Thanks : )

I don't drink coffee but I do keep some instant around for iced coffee. Do you think instant would work? Would strong brewed be twice as much?

I don't see why instant wouldn't work. I think I'd add more coffee to the amount you make in order for it to be strong.

I have a bottle of instant espresso in my freezer for when I bake using chocolate but do indulge in a cup of fresh brewed coffee in the morning.....You could always just stop by the local McDonalds and pick up a cup when or if you decide to try it....I really like their coffee on the fly and a small is only 79 cents.....TeeHee!!!

I didn't think it was too sweet....we only marinated the strip steaks for 4 hours however, not overnight. That could be the difference......I really liked the flavor. I always have coffee. Doesn't one of the Texas chefs, Robert ?? use a ground coffee as a crust on his steaK? This is certainly not as gritty as coffee grinds.

Hubby is not a 'sweet' with 'meat' kind of guy and I only marinated the steaks for about 4 hours too but like I told Corinne, I'd halve the brown sugar next time. To each his own. The marinade is really lovely. Great flavours going on. I think instant coffee would totally work. I will certainly use this marinade recipe again. It really dressed up our steak. Thanks Corinne!

I made this the other night. This was fantastic. I loved the flavor that I have to assume came from the coffee. It didnt taste like coffee. I think it just enhanced the meats natural flavor. I dont know how to explain it. I had this Meatier Bite Mushroom Stroganoff for the side dish. Thanks for the heads up notyourmomma and thank you for the great recipe Wynnebaer. Posted pics

I'm so delighted so many of you have enjoyed this marinade. Thanks for all the lovely comments about it. I really appreciate them all.
Tina, I've seen ground coffee used in a rub for steaks before but never had the courage to try it.

I made this again. I let it marinade for 2 days due to getting home late the evening I intended to make it. It turned out even better. I think this has become my favorite LB marinade. Thanks again Wynnebaer

I made this last night and used a little sirloin I had. I stuck it in the marinade before I left for work, so it was in there for about 10 hours before I broiled it. I wasn't so much worried about the coffee taste but about all the pepper! I just made sure I brushed all the peppercorns off. This had an excellent flavor that I had never tasted before. I guess that's from the coffee (I used instant). I was thinking it would be really a great marinade to flavor up chicken with. Added my picture, too!

Frankie, I loved this marinade. I dont know how to explain the great flavor it had other than like you say. It must be from the coffee. Let us know if you try it on chicken.......BTW, Im spying that BIG fork again in your pic. Your sirloin looks perfectly done. Im going to do this again, but with a "beef loin top sirloin grilling roast petite" I grabbed this by mistake a couple of months ago thinking I was getting a tri-tip. When I went to cook it I realized it wasnt a tri-tip. This turned out to be the BEST cut of meat I have ever had. Now I look for them. They dont have them often

okay I have to try this soon! I have so much top round beef. Would this work? They are all so closely labeled it gets confusing. I think this is a slow cooking beef but not sure. i have used it in the crock pot and works nicely but not roasted. Let me know what you think!

I have never used that cut, ML2C. I do remember my mom always getting them tenderized though. when I was a kid. That was the only steak I ever knew till my very late teens. I can say that even if it comes out tough, it will have a great flavor. You just may have to chew a little longer : )

I'm not sure if that cut would work, ml2c. I don't think this marinade has anything in it that will tenderize. I think top round is a bit tough, isn't it? I get all those cuts mixed up though.

Any cut of meat roasted low low and slow slow will tenderize itself. Place it on the indirect heat side if using a grill.
