Cooking Failure Friday

    Good Morning Everybody!
I had leftover Roast Beef in my freezer the other day which I cubed up and threw in to a pot of Demi Glace (Pkg'd) and then I wanted to try my hand at Yorkshire Pudding. Sort of was aiming for a Hot Beef using Yorkshire pudding as the base. My Mom made Yorkshire pudding on occasion when I was a kid. I think this was my first attempt but you know my memory! :) I had bookmarked three different recipes on GR.
    No Fail Yorkshire Pudding
    Yorkshire Pudding Real Deal
    Yorkshire Puddings
They're all quite similar but with some variations in egg to flour to milk measurements. I liked the look of the Real Deal Yorkshire pudding the best....the picture of the puds is what I was going for. All three recipes make 12 puddings. So I wanted to half the recipe so I'd only end up with six. Pic below of my attempt which I sorely failed at. Looking at the picture I'm going to guess that I should have left them in the oven longer and maybe they would have puffed up more and browned more. I took this picture straight away after pulling them out of the oven and within a couple of minutes they had shrunk to little flat things. They tasted okay, not great, but okay. It was pretty amusing actually.
The other thing I probably did that got me into trouble was that the recipe called for 3 eggs and of course trying to halve that is a bit tricky so I only used one extra large egg.
I know Joce makes Yorkshire pudding on a regular basis. I checked to see if she had a recipe posted but she doesn't. When she gets back I'll ask her for a recommendation and tips.
Anyway...just thought I'd share. I'll try this again and keep trying 'til I get it right. I have some English genes in me....it's got to be possible. :)
    Making
    Ham N Swiss Loaf
for dinner this evening. Thought it'd be a fun Friday night meal.
Wishing everyone a most lovely day!

Morning Janet! Uggh so sorry these didn't turn out as you had hoped. Yours do look like they were thinking about poofing up more :) Did you get your eggs to room temp.? I always forget to do that, even though I know it's always better to get them room temp. when baking. Oh well, just keep trying different recipes, I'm sure you'll get something great eventually! That Ham N Swiss loaf looks SO GOOD!

Briauna's cheer at half time went great. She did an awesome job. I got pictures but there is too much going on in the pics to even make her out if I posted one here. She did look adorable though, we curled her ponytail and put gold glitter all in her hair, and on her face and arms. We were running late so I couldn't get a snap of her before we left. Was a good night though :)

Got my workout in today and now I feel great to get on with the day :) I might make a run to Sam's in a bit. We have a Girl Scout meeting tonight and Bri will finally get her new green Junior vest. Dinner tonight is

along with asparagus and sweet potatoes. Hope everyone has a great day!

Caiden went outside to jump on the trampoline and came in smelling like a bottle of bug spray was dumped on him. Michael must have left the storage cabinet unlocked...grrrrr. Bath time!

Think I'm going to make these for lunch, they look yum!

    Good morning.

Janet, I am sure your future attempts at Yorkshire pudding will be successful. I have never tried to make it - probably my German background coming into play - LOL. so I have no idea how to proceed. Now you have made me curious so may try it sometime - maybe.

Here are two more sites which have (probably similar) recipes. Photos of each one show they did not stay puffed up but sank into a lovely bowl shape.

    http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/9020/best-yorkshire-puddings.

Hope Brauna enjoys her Girl Scout meeting and getting the green vest. The pony tail and glitter must have looked adorable!

We have to run to Columbia today so I have no idea about supper tonight. Maybe eat out or maybe something quick like pancakes - will have to see how late it is when we get back.

The horses are happy. I gave them some over ripe apples that were too far gone for cooking but still edible for them. They are happy. I'm hoping we get them in the other pasture ASAP since the grass is much better - Wayne keeps talking about fertilizing and seeding but so far no progress. It desperately needs both. So does the hay field.

We're home! We went and stayed in Kingston On, for a couple of days then went Upper NY State to Syracuse and Watertown. I was able to check out a huge bunch of Outlet Malls there, while Den hunkered in the hotel and watched all his sports. He was a Happy Camper:) We ate at The Dinosaur BBQ twice in Syracuse b/c, Den was so impressed with the St. Louis Style Ribs and their The Philly Steak http://www.dinosaurbarbque.com/media/documents/2014/6/SyrRestMenu_2012June.pdf
All and all it was a good relaxing little trip:)
Janet, Lately I have been making Jamie Oliver's Huge Yorkshire Puddings and they are always successful. I never half the recipe b/c it usually makes only 8 or 9 little puddings and the leftovers can be heated up in about 15 seconds in the micro for Brekkie or lunch. IMHO I think when halving a recipe, always go with an extra egg, especially Yorkshire Pudding. Also the pan should be sizzling hot as well when you put the batter in. Here are a few links. Which might help you?

Michelle, Very cool Briauna does Cheer Leading as well as all her other activities. LOL too funny about Caiden getting into the bug spray:) A good thing he didn't get it into his eyes though.

Karen, Have a good time in Columbia today.

Den will have grilled rib eye steak and oven fries for dinner, and I am not quite sure at the moment what I am going to have yet. It might drop into my grocery cart when I am out this afternoon. I will have to go back and read up on what I have missed.

    Wishing everyone a great Friday!

    Yay! Chit Chat!
I was racing around the house like crazy this morning. Jim took a business call from home at 9 so I got him his breakfast and while he was talking I went down on the treadmill. Yay me! When I got back up at 9:40 the phone rang and a friend said she was going to drop over for a visit at 10:30! I hadn't eaten, the bed wasn't made, the kitchen was a disaster....but by 10:25 I was on top of it and they just left a bit ago.
Yes Michelle, I did bring both the egg and the milk to room temperature. Glad to hear all went great with Bri's cheer and cute on the glitter in her hair. Very sweet! :) OOOoooo on the Green Junior vest. Verra nice. She'll be so excited! :) That Chicken Marsala looks delicious. LOL @ Caiden and the bug spray. Benjamin went crazy with a can of orange scented air freshener once and you could smell it forever. :)
Thanks for the links Karen. I'm determined to master this. :) Have a good trip today. Fun with the apples to the horses.
Yay you're back Joce! Missed ya! :) Nice on the trip to Kingston and Syracuse and Watertown. Did you find some good deals? Did you hear about the new Tanger Outlet Mall in Kanata? Where did you eat in Kingston. Questions, questions eh! :)Yum @ the Dinosaur BBQ. Sounds like my kind of place. :) I like the Swag Sampler Plate :
    - Spicy Shrimp Boil
    - Chicken Wings
    - Fried Green Tomatoes
    - Deviled Eggs
The Bronzed Catfish sounded good too although I'd forego the rice and I'm not keen on honey mustard sauces. The Chicken Steak also sounded good. Thanks for the Yorkshire pudding tips. I'll try Jamie's recipe next. I did heat the pan first. Have fun running errands. A pleasant day today! Hope it stays like this for the weekend.

Hi Karen! Pancakes for dinner is always a hit around here :) Eating out is a plus too! Sounds like you have some pretty happy horses, hope Wayne can get them in the other field soon!

Welcome back Joce! Sounds like you guys had an amazingly relaxing trip! I'd love a quiet getaway about right now :) Did you buy anything good at the outlet malls? Have fun grocery shopping :)

Uggh Janet, sorry your morning was so hectic. My pet peeve is when people drop over unexpectedly or with short notice. Lol at Benjamin and the orange air freshener. That hasn't happened here...YET. We have a new Tanger Outlets that opened up around Christmas time last year. Lot's of great stores!

I don't mind people dropping in but I didn't want to be caught so unorganized either so speed was necessary. :) Plus it sure made the morning go by quickly! I'd never heard of these Tanger Outlets before. Jim had been wanting to go last night as he had a coupon for 35% off at Eddie Bauer but when he decided to work from home yesterday he didn't feel like driving back into town in the evening. The Malls attracted hoards and hoards of people on the weekend as that's when they opened. Our main highway was totally backed up.

O.K. Janet, We stayed at the Best Western in Kingston
    http://book.bestwestern.com/bestwestern/CA/ON/Kingston-hotels/BEST-WESTERN-Fireside-Inn/Hotel-Overview.do?propertyCode=66017
We ate at the Bistro there the first night and I had the Lobster Pastry and French Onion Soup and Den had the Chicken Beggars Purses and The Grilled Pork Chops
    http://www.bistrostefan.com/bistro/index.cfm/menu/
We also went to Chez Piggy for Lunch. Den didn't like their menu at all b/c, LOL everything had as he said, had something hot in it like jalopeno peppers, horseradish or
or something Fruitzie Pie in it:) He ended out ordering a Caesar Salad with chicken:)
I had the Alaskan Sea Scallops with Blood Orange Sauce and it was very nice.
    http://www.chezpiggy.com/menu/
We took Alyssa and her friend to the “The Lone Star”for dinner and had a good visit with them.
We also went to The Chien Noir for lunch and Den had a burger and I had a Roasted Tomato Bisque soup and Fried Calamari which was extremely good.
    http://www.lechiennoir.com/
I have been meaning to check out that new Outlet Mall in Kanata. I should go before the snow flies too. I bought a bunch of new towels and a new duvet set for the guest room, a couple of shirts for Den and a couple of tops for me in Syracuse. Den is starting to bring in the lawn furniture and umbrella etc. and I should bring in some of my buckets and tools and cut some things back in the garden as it is such a nice day. I can't believe Halloween is only one week away!

What a fun trip you had Joce! :) I've heard so many nice things about the Fireside Inn but never stayed there. That being said we haven't made all that many trips to Kingston. Your dinners at the Bistro sure sounded good! It has a great menu. Of course I'm a sucker for Prime Rib. NICE on Chez Piggy! I think as a foodie, you HAVE to go there if you're in town. I would have chosen the Vietnamese Spring rolls as my appy. Jim for sure would have had the Mussels. And I choose the Steak Frite with Balsamic Horseradish butter. Both Jim and I are big fans of the Lonestar and we have actually been to the one in Kingston. That's nice you got out with Alyssa. That Tomato Bisque sounded wonderful from The Chien Noir. I think I'd order the Lobster Fettuccinne. I think we'll do our ceremonial bringing in of the patio furniture this weekend as well. Nice on the Grand Marnier and Beer from the Duty Free. :)

Hi. Welcome back Joce. Nice excursion and loads of good eating. I love my Grand Marnier.
Janet, you are ever the gracious hostess. I'd flip. Sorry for the flop on the YP. Ham and Swiss loaf sounds delicious. Glad Jim stayed home to work.
Michelle, hurrah for Briauna's cheer! And her Junior vest! We like chicken marsala, nice supper. Ugh on the bug spray.
Karen, have a great day and hopefully have a nice dinner out. Pancakes are super nice for supper too. Glad the horses appreciated the apples.
Happy TGIF to Marie, Shona and Laurie.
Supper is turkey pot pie. Spinach salad.

Hi Tina! Turkey Pot Pie sounds lovely. As does the spinach salad. I just came across Jamie Oliver's Spinach salad recipe with craisins. Love it. Gonna shortlist it.
Such a lovely day here. Good for the soul. Got up to 16C/60F this afternoon. Rain tomorrow. Boo.
Halloween next Friday night. I'd like to do a fun Halloween meal for Jim and I and maybe watch a silly movie. I've always wanted to watch "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes". :) We watched "Sex Tape" last night starring Cameron Diaz and Jason Segal. It was good for a laugh.

Finally saw 'Chef' and quite enjoyed the food scenes. I thought it was a delicious foodie movie. They say the same about Helen Mirren in the 'One Hundred Foot Journey'

Olivia was trying to get her computer fixed and the Geek Squad fellow kept asking her for her phone #. He teased he wasn't trying to memorize it. He asked if she had signed up to the Microsoft Cloud. She said "no" because of that movie 'Sex Tape'. She blushed and said "Not that I would do anything like that!!!" Tall nerdy guy said, "I need your phone number again, but never mind, I memorized it" and typed it in. She is getting a new computer for $49.00 more than it would cost to fix the old one. Bigger, faster and with a warranty.

    Hey all
Busy day of course driving everyone everywhere.
Made escarole soup (wedding soup) for dinner. I made the whole chicken in a crockpot yesterday. It makes so much liquid . I deboned the chicken that was left over with the juice and used that as stock for the escarole soup. Came out really good. Brother in law and niece came for dinner. I called over to Franks sisters house because it's their favorite dish of mine and she had to work tonight. She called me ten minutes later and said johns coming anyway lol. It was nice he brought donuts for desert.
I have tomorrow off!! I worked Wednesday night inst ad of Saturday because I thought my sister and family were coming from Connecticut for the weekend but she called and said they were just coming for the day on Sunday. She just started a new full time job last month and had a lot of home stuff to catch up on. I'm maine the spoon roast on Sunday.

Welcome back, Joce. We like the Best Westerns also. The Bistro’s french onion soup would be my choice. Wayne would probably not care for Chez Piggy if their food was spicy hot. And he would rather do most anything than go shopping - LOL. Good deal on the duty free store.

Michelle, the closest Tanger Mall is probably three hours away in Branson, MO. I have not been there, but it is a big attraction. I definitely will avoid the weekends if I do check it out. We have some outlets nearby. The kitchen store is one of my favorites.

We ate out at the Bulgogi House, a Korean (obviously - ha ha) restaurant nearby. Their pork bulgogi is to die for. It was after 7 when we finally got home. I”m tired and it will be an early bedtime tonight.

Janet - “The attack of the killer tomatoes” was a hoot! It is so tongue-in-cheek humor. A real classic horror flick! I won’t spoil it for you except to say it was so bad it was good.
Enjoy. Which laptop are you looking for?

Tina, the feetloaf pin sounds so wild! Someone has too much imagination / time on their hands. Cool!

Hi Laurie! Escarole soup sounds good. Sounds like you had a busy weekend.

    Hello Marie.
