Whole-Wheat Wednesday

Good Morning Everyone! Not sure what was trying to get me yesterday but I'm feeling a lot better today so hope I managed to beat it. Jim is going into town this afternoon to donate blood so I'll go in with him and get the groceries I need for the weekend.
I have a MAJOR craving for BBQ Hamburgers and Potato salad so that is on the menu for dinner this evening. If it is too cold tonight for me to BBQ I shall just fry them up in a pan, but I am hoping to BBQ.
10 DAYS UNTIL BENJAMIN ARRIVES! So the count down is on. I'm way over the moon excited.
Rented a movie from Redbox last night (got it free actually with a promo code which was great as it sucked so at least I didn't pay anything!). "The Two Faces of January". I hated it. No redeeming qualities.
So Laurie....how much snow did you get up getting? I looked online and saw Framingham had received 33.5" and I think that's fairly close to you? Do you have to go back to work today?
    Marie?
    Joce...how are you doing today?
    Tina, hope you're doing okay.
How'd that recipe go last night Michelle? Did you use those Sweet Potato fries in the bag or make your own?
Do you go pick up your car today Karen?
    Wishing everyone a good day.

Good morning Janet:) I cannot believe only 10 more days until Benjamin will be home! How exciting !!! Do you have a killer menu planned? I'm sure he misses his Mom's cooking and has probably had a few requests:)

I've been busy the last couple of days mainly with end of the year stuff.among other things! I now have my tax organizer from our accountant (which I love) that lists everything he needs from us in order to do our return..I know what he needs, but it's nice to have a checklist to go by.just in case..I happen to forget something:)

Not sure about dinner yet..hope everyone is doing well.

I'm awake. Yeah! I've been taking the anxiety meds pretty steadily and they keep me semi-calm. I've had more bad news than a girl can take and I'm in full retreat.

It's chilly here and the wind has calmed down. The dogs love it. Even big old Charlie spins abd chases his tail. Lola continues to charge the TV when she sees an animal on TV. The dog food commercials send her in a frenzy.

TEN days!!! Woohoo. I'm sure you are beyond excited, Janet. I love the cartoons. That burger looks good.

I've only been eating leftovers from Olivia and Scotty, I just don't feel like cooking. I have a full freezer but even reheating is too difficult to remember. I never made the chili and I have to cook that ground beef today. I'll just cook and crumble for use later.

Aw Charlie is raising a ruckus. I'll be back.

Excellent to hear Ben will be home soon, Janet! I am sure he is getting excited to come home too! Are you going to go for a skate on the pond today and practice again? What are your menu plans for your company this weekend? YUM! Burgers and potato salad! I NEVER think about making potato salad at this time of the year! I guess I equate potato salad and summer together for some reason?

Laurie, I hope everything is O.K. in Wilmington? No doubt it will take some time to get all the roads cleared and everything all shoveled out.

Karen, Thanks for the link to the Jewish dish. Snitziach. It still bugs me a bit it was included as a true Canadian food! She could have included something like “Beaver Tails” instead. OH WELL! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BeaverTails

Marie, Your accountant has a really good idea giving you a list to check off of all the things a business needs to file their taxes. It will save both your time and his. I hope Rick's Dad is doing much better as well.

Tina, Good to hear your meds are helping you and that it is cooler there as well to help you sleep better. LOL Lola must be funny to see when she charges at the TV:) At least Liv and Scotty are providing you with leftovers. I bet they are good b/c, they would probably come from The Toasted Monkey? Try and pace yourself and take it easy. HUGS)))

We are having roasted chicken breasts tonight and I am not sure about the sides at the moment.

Good to see you Marie. It was a toss up to me whether your Internet had gone ka-flooey again or if you were super busy....and super busy wins! :) I do indeed have a fairly extensive menu planned for Benjamin while he's home, in addition to some restaurants that he wants to go and some foods he has requested.Yay on the Tax Organizer. And yes...how's Rick's Dad doing today?
You'll get through this Tina and I'm glad you have some meds to help during the darkest days. Leftovers from Liv and Scotty are totally acceptable.
No, no skating for me today Joce. Jim and I went down on the treadmill. (It almost killed me today) and by the time I get things straightened up in the house and the potato salad made it'll be time to head into town. I am planning on making Pot Roast for our guests on Friday night and Kikkoman Brined Rotisserie Chickens for the Saturday night. I hope to have time to do a cute appetizer for the girls.
    http://www.creativekidsnacks.com/2012/12/17/snowman-party-poppers/
And I'd also like to make a chocolate pudding dessert layered with whipped cream and then decorated for Groundhog's Day with Oreo crumbs and teddy grahams. The girls like to cook so they can probably help with me with that. They are big "Masterchef" fans. I totally agree with you that I equate potato salad with summer and that's why I HAVE to make it a couple of times over the winter just to give me a taste of warmer temps. :)

We just got an update on Rick's dad, he''s doing much better since they took him off the pain med that was making him nauseous..he's eating and drinking fluids..thanks for your concern!

Joce, yes, the organizer is sooo helpful! We do a profit/loss every month so that's good..I just get our mileage totaled for both vehicles...mileage for installs, bids, travel to pickup stock, post office, banking..then I have to do our mileage for Doctor visits, picking up meds, dental..plus the amount we spent of Doctors & Dentists..I should do all this on a monthly basis, but I don't. I like to put things off..not a good quality, but I always get everything done:) I work very quickly when I have a deadline..haha

Janet, yes, being busy is way better than the internet not working:) Knock on wood!
I am so happy that Benjamin will be home soon..and eating VERY well:)

Tina, glad to hear your meds are helping you get some much needed rest..always thinking of you and Liv..hang in there dear ladyxoxox

Rick's making grilled lamb burgers (ugh) I might have turkey:)

    Hi everyone.

Janet, out of curiosity I checked Google and found one site with a few Canadian recipes. One is http://www.canadianliving.com/recipe-directory/cuisine_type/canadian.php. It has an Apple snow recipe that sounds really honest-to-goodness actual Canadian in origin!
Don't know about the others - but anyway, that would seem more authentic.

Marie, we are also getting tax papers together - with the required rmd's it will kill us. Having to draw money out will put us in a higher bracket so we have to use the money to pay the gov. instead of for living. Icky.

Joce - chicken is always a good choice!

Tina, glad your meds are keeping you on an even keel. There are always so many details to take care of, even after the service is over and life continues in a new path. So good that Olivia and Scotty are keeping you supplied with eats. Is Charlie calmed down now that he raised the alarm? Sounds like they enjoy the cooler temperatures, also. Take care, let us know how things are going.

We ran a zillion errands and are back home. Did stop for coffee and an overpriced, high calorie bagel sandwich at Einsteins Bagels for breakfast (brunch ?) on the way back. I swept and mopped the kitchen floor, Wayne neatified the LR and swept up the mud we tracked in. Homer refused his pain pill and did not eat. Some mornings he just isn't hungry. He is moping and quiet -- yesterday he ran and jumped and followed Wayne to the barn to do chores. Like any old dog, he has good days and bad days, this is one of the bad ones. He is asleep on his dog bed guarding his food dish. Which he won't eat from. But won't let the cats get it, either.

Washer has stopped. Laptop is on 17 %. Must go plug it in and switch laundry to the drier. See your later.

    Oh I see Marie:)

They at least mention “Poutine”, “Montreal Smoked Meat”, Montreal Bagels”, "Nanaimo Bars", "Clamato Juice" and “Butter Tarts” in that site you found Karen. Plus many other things in fact three pages of recipes and Canadian Foods.
This one has quite a list of Canadian Foods just keep scrolling down. There are pics as well. I did not see Kraft Peanut Butter mentioned anywhere? They only make it and sell it in Canada as well and Australia. (I just discovered!) LOL It is the best Peanut Butter in the world:) IMHO! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_cuisine

So pleased to hear Rick's Dad is getting better Marie. Do let us know when he manages to head back to his own place! I've never had a Lamb burger before. Turkey sounds good too. I can't wait for our "Christmas Turkey with all the trimmings" once Benjamin gets here. I didn't make one this year since we headed to Montreal.
Glad you got your errands done Karen and I hope that although the bagel sandwich was pricey that it was also yummy! :) Hope Homer feels better tomorrow. It is amusing that although he doesn't want his food he's guarding it from the cats. :) LOL! There are plenty of uniquely Canadian foods that could have been included in that book. I find it insulting that the author didn't feel the need to do her research. Hope your car gets fixed up soon.

Good Afternoon! Glad you feeling better Janet! Those bugs will just sneak up on you. BBQ sounds yummy, crossing fingers it's not too cold to BBQ outside! Woo Hoo on Benjamin being there in 10 days :) The sweet potato nachos were delish last night! Omg, those snow man appy's are adorable.

Glad to hear you've just been super busy Marie!! That's wonderful how well your FIL is doing :) :)

Tina, it's good to hear that the meds are at least keeping you somewhat calm. Lol at Lola and the T.V. :) I don't blame you for not wanting to cook, just take it easy.

Hi Joce, yum on roasted chicken!

I agree with you Karen on the price of the bagel's at Einstiens. They do have a pretty awesome garlic bagel though, they are fantastic!

Went to Trader Joe's early this morning on a whim :) I actually was going through my bookmarks the other day and saw this recipe of Luisa's Easy Cioppino which calls for some of TJ's stuff so this morning decided to drive down there and look for the items. Found it all, so it will be on my to do list soon :) Of course I left there with A LOT more stuff than that though lol. Have some things to do around here then I have to pick Briauna up from school because she has to be at play practice early, it's their last practice before the first show Friday night. I have a recipe to post here in a bit that I whipped up yesterday when some neighbors stopped by. It turned out to be a pretty delicious appy! Tonight I am finally giving this one a try
Easy Cioppino I was going to make it a couple months ago and something happened, can't remember what, and I didn't end up making it. Not sure what I'm serving with it yet. Hope everyone is enjoying their day :)

Wayne and his buddy are going out to set live-traps by the lower pond. (He has agreed to release the blond raccoon if it gets caught in one.)

Cool that Briauna is in the play, Michelle!

My Mom was 91 and Dad almost 92 when they passed. It can be a scary thing if the nursing home does not treat them right. So glad he feels better.

Sometimes pain meds can be almost as bad as the pain. Wayne had to quit taking some for his back because of the side affects, He is improving after the chiropractor treatments. A holistic, no drugs approach has really helped.

We have a dinner meeting tonight - caterers are really quite good.
    it should be fun.

Tomorrow I am on clear liquid diet and have a colonoscopy scheduled for Friday. Ugh! The prep is terrible. Been there, done that! We have to stop by the fireplace store Friday afternoon if I am up to it. If not, it will up to Wayne to handle it.

Quick question ladies of ODD:) I'm going to make Keni's Swedish Meatballs and was wondering if making it and having it in the fridge before she bakes it for dinner would still work well..since it has half & half in it..it wouldn't get all weird would it?

Michelle, enjoy the Cioppino! make sure you have a good crusty sourdough to serve with it:) We LOVE the stuff, well, I like the broth and crab..that's about as far as eating the seafood Rick puts in his goew with me..haha

Karen..oh wow, I have never had a Colonoscopy..Rick has..it didn't like all the prep stuff of course, but said the procedure wasn't all that bad...hope all goes quickly and then you don't have to worry about having another for 2 years , right? You'll do just fine dear:) I should get one..maybe sometime this year..or next.

Bummer, Karen:( The day before is not the nicest however, I never found the procedure too bad. Just a literal PIA I think mine is in 5 years again? Phew!

Marie, It should be fine in the fridge. If you find the sauce too thick when you take it out of the fridge? Just do as she mentioned at the bottom to add more stock or cream. It shouldn't go all weird as you say:) I would wait until the last to cook the noodles though.
I have to make that real soon too!

Michelle, LOL I was wondering that I had read that wrong! I do stuff like that all the time:)

    Hey everyone.
We got about 30 inches. I did go to work today and worked a little extra to make up the time. The big mystery of the day in Massachussets. An anonymous person shoveled the Finish line of the Boston Marathon. Where the bombings where. Even the Boston Police where tweeting #whoshoveledfinishline? Apparently it was a local bartender who felt it was sacred and should never be covered. Cool
I love Trader Joe's. I don't think there prices are too bad either and you can get a lot of interesting things. Some of our favorites from there. The Orange chicken in the freezer section along with the Chipolte turkey burgers. They also have an egg white salad in the fridge section that I love. The closest one to me is about half hour away.
    Tina hang in there!
I seasoned my cast Iron pans in honor of Keni Day Sunday. And they must have needed it because they work so much better. Clean better too. Thanks Keni!
Tonight's dinner is chicken broccoli and ziti. But I'm going to try to lighten it up. Rachel's boyfriend is eating over.
Lol he texted my mom in Florida to see how she was doing. My mom just loves him. He is a very personable kid. But all Rachel's friends love Gramma!! And they all call her Gramma! Just like when I was a kid all my friends loved her and called her mom! Not sure what it is. Other than she is crazy lol says anything and has absolutely no filter. Lol my sister says she has the personality of a 14 year old boy.

I envy you your shop at Trader Joe's Michelle! That Chicken Oreganata looks very good. I've only made it once and I used Marie's recipe. It was lovely.
    Ricks Cioppino
Very fun that Bri's play is opening Friday night. :)
Enjoy your Dinner meeting this evening Karen. Good luck with your colonoscopy and prep. I hope you are feeling well enough to go to the Fireplace Shop Friday as you might spot a kettle there?
I have that Swedish Meaball recipe on my short list Marie. I forgot to buy the half and half today. I wonder if Evaporated milk would do? So nice you're going to bring some over to your Mom and Dad's. :) You're such a good daughter.
Fun on seasoning your cast iron pans for Keni Day Laurie. She would have approved of that for sure. :) ROFL @ your sister saying your Mom has the personality of a 14 year old boy. That's hilarious. :) She sounds like quite a character alright.
Jim gave blood and I ran to Walmart and bought some Valentine's stickers for the girls to craft with this weekend as well as a couple of Valentine's Day chocolate bars for my niece who will be here for Valentine's Day. I was about to buy three Valentine's Day cards, one for Jim, one for Benjamin and one for my Mom but I looked at the prices and they ranged from $7-$11. REALLY?????????????? I'm not paying that. That's ridiculous! I would rather buy Jim a bottle of wine and stick a heart on it. it would last longer and taste better. Can't believe it!
Got all my groceries. Can't fit one more thing in the fridge.
Too cold to BBQ so I'm going to cook the burgers on the stove. :(

Janet, I believe evaporated milk would make a good sub for half & half..I googled it:)

    http://www.foodsubs.com/Dairyoth.html
half-and-half = half & half (10.5 - 18% fat) Substitutes: equal parts cream and milk OR evaporated milk OR 7/8 C milk + 1 ½ tablespoons butter or margarine

Awww thanks, I try to be a decent daughter:)
A bottle of wine with a heart sticker is way better than a card!

Laurie, so very glad to hear you all faired well with that storm! take care:)

    Off to help with dinner..
