- 1 large prepared garlic Loaf (the large Italian loaf, not a baguette) shopping list
- 8 large deli slices of Mozzarella, fontina or Provolone shopping list
- olive or cooking oil for pan-frying/grilling shopping list
- 1 650 ml (22 oz) jar of Marinara sauce--or your favorite Pasta sauce, I like basil and tomato sauce, shopping list
- ~Fresh chopped basil or pesto sauce for garnish shopping list
- ***Burger Patty*** shopping list
- 1 pound of ground sirloin shopping list
- 1 pound of ground sweet Italian sausage ( or links with casing removed, the Sweet has a nice basil flavour but mild or spicy Italian are fine too) shopping list
- 1/4 cup italian seasoned bread crumbs shopping list
- 2 eggs, beaten shopping list
- 2 cloves garlic, minced shopping list
- 1/4 cup onion, grated shopping list
- 1/4 cup grated parmesan shopping list
- 1/4 tsp. Black pepper shopping list
- pinch of Sea salt shopping list
How to make it
- In a large bowl, mix meats, garlic, onion, bread crumbs, eggs, parmesan cheese and seasonings together until just blended, careful not to overwork it.
- Divide the meat into 8 equal portions and gently shape into a patty form. I shape them into ovals and indent the center. (For bigger appetite's, this makes 6 generous portions)
- Preheat the grill or pan over med-high heat, lightly grease. Cook the meat patties how you normally would do it, roughly 4-5 minutes per side until the center reaches 165F.
- Place the tomato sauce in a small pot and bring to a simmer, then turn to low and place a lid on the pot to keep the sauce warm.
- Meanwhile, pre-heat oven and bake the garlic loaf per the garlic loaf instructions. ( usually 375f for 10-15 minutes.)
- When the garlic bread is done, remove from the oven and turn the Broiler on. When the burgers are cooked, set them aside.
- Cut the garlic loaf in 4 pieces, opened up it will be 8 slices.
- Place bread on a large baking sheet. Spoon half the sauce over the 8 bread pieces, place the burgers on top, then the cheese slices, then remaining sauce.
- Place under the broiler until the cheese melts, about 3-4 minutes.
- Top with basil or pesto sauce if desired.
- *Cut the recipe in half to make 4 portions. Freeze the remaining patties and half the garlic loaf for future use.
- *For a change up, make meatballs and serve it on Submarine buns!

I finally got around to making this although I used a hamburger that I had made last week and froze so I didn't make the patty as per the recipe. Still, this was delicious and filling and I will definitely make this again. More in IMI 6/25/16
