How to make it

  • Peel apples, cut in fourths, trim out core, cut each piece in thirds.
  • Place in bowl.
  • Mix sugar flour and cinnamon and sprinkle over apples, toss to coat.
  • Spoon into pie shell
  • Drizzle with lemon juice.
  • Make topping below
  • Combine sugar flour, cut in butter.
  • Sprinkle topping over filling.
  • Slide pie into clean unused heavy brown paper bag (use a good sized heavy grocery bag)
  • Fold over end two times, clip with a paper clip.
  • Place on cookie sheet
  • Bake at 425 degrees for 1 hour
  • Split bag open (be careful of the steam)
  • Cool Serve

    I always make my Thanksgiving pies like this. I got my recipe years ago from an Amish cookbook & have been doing it since. You will all love this method & it does brown well. So does the bag.

    What a funny way to cook a pie. Does it brown? I like apples and I've never made a pie crust so this would be an adventure for me to try that is for sure!!! Love cinnamon, it is a favorite flavor.
