Ingredients
  • 1 head cabbage
  • 1 lb. ground beef
  • 1/2 lb. ground pork or veal
  • 16 oz. can tomato sauce (your favourite)
  • 8 oz. can tomatoes
  • 2 cups cooked rice
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 onion finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 Tbsp. butter or margarine
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Directions
  1. Remove the core from the cabbage.
  2. Put the cabbage in boiling water and remove the leaves as they soften.
  3. Sauté the onions and garlic in the butter/margarine for a short time.
  4. In a bowl add the onions, meat, cooked rice, eggs and salt and pepper, mix this well.
  5. Place about 2 Tbsp. of the meat mixture in the center of a cabbage leaf and roll inward, then roll sides in and continue to roll.
  6. Place the rolls in a large pot and pour the tomato sauce onto the rolls.
  7. Then, with you hands, squeeze canned tomatoes and arrange on top of the cabbage rolls.
  8. Simmer over low heat for 2-3 hours.

Hi there invisiblechef ;-) Yes, you could steam them but I personally think the tomato sauce or juice would be missed.


This is very simmilar to my recipe ( that I can't find) but instead of simmering they are baked in the oven.

I am going to make these when I am in the new home next month for my two grandkids, and yes I will bake them in the oven slowly all day, so I can remember what our home used to smell like with these cooking in the oven when I was a young girl. Thanks for the recipe


This recipe sounds great and I would substitute the ground beef with ground turkey/chicken. Thank you for posting.

Picture perfect. One of my favorites. I love going to Los Angeles to Canters restaurant and getting their cabbage rolls. Actually, cabbage rolls anywhere is just fine with me. Dang I love cabbage rolls and baking with the sauce is pretty much a must for me. take out some rolls from the pan, spooning on some sauce, oh I can taste it now. thanks, JJ.

My MIL always put some saurkraut in the bottom of her pan along with any loose cabbage leaves and a row of the stuff cabbages then some saurkraut and she would finish the top with some kraut and then pour over tomato juice.So good.Even warmed up.
