How to make it

  • In big bowl mix flour, sugar, egg yolks, butter and zest together;
  • divide into 2 equal parts.
  • Press 1 part into well greased pan.
  • Mix applesauce and spices; spread over dough.
  • Sprinkle remaining dough over applesauce.
  • Bake at 350 degrees for 40 to 45 minutes.
  • Top with whipped cream or lemon sauce.

    Sounds terrific! I always like to try Irish recipes since I am Irish! I was getting frustrated not being able to find a recipe without raisins. My mom cant remember her recipe for applesauce cake that she made when I was young. Well, the Irish must stick together through some ways, because your recipe is EXACTLY the same one as hers! I cant wait to get my own kids hooked with this, straight out of the oven and with whipped cream. Thank you for the memories!

    This was very good! And yes, it was moist. I think my favorite part was the lemon zest flavoring! I do have a question, though. What pan do you use? I used an 8 by 8 Pyrex,and cooked it longer than suggested,but the cake didn't cook against the applesauce. I am assuming it needs to be a bigger dish, to make the cake thinner. Loved it though! Thanx!
