A favorite adaptation of an old cheater's version of a sweet garlic pickle. Must eat with sharp cheddar cheese on a triscuit cracker for full enjoyment.

Ingredients
  • 1 large jar of whole dill pickles
  • sugar
  • 1 small jar of hot jalapeno slices
  • 1 tbsp. of red pepper flakes
  • 1 head of garlic, yes, the whole head peeled and thinly sliced.
  • 1 fresh habenero pepper, poked full of holes with a toothpick

Directions
  1. Drain all the juice off the whole dill pickles.
  2. Slice pickles into very thin slices.
  3. Pack the sliced pickles back into the original jar in layers as follows:
  4. Layer of pickles
  5. about 1/4 cup of sugar
  6. a few jalapeno slices
  7. a sprinkle of red pepper flakes
  8. a few pieces of slivered garlic
  9. Continue until the jar is completely packed.
  10. Bury the fresh habenero deep in the middle of the jar.
  11. Cover with a piece of wax paper.
  12. Screw the top back on tightly.
  13. Invert the jar and store in the refrigertor for at least one day if you can stand it.
  14. Best if allowed to mellow for 3 days inverting every 12 hours.
  15. They get hotter as time goes by. But, boy oh boy are they good.

I have been looking and looking...there is a farmers market that sold sweet/spicy pickles, for a while. I haven't been able to find anything comprable but I think this is going to be really close! I tried a batch starting w/ bread & butter pickles and adding jalapenos, garlic, red onion and red pepper flakes. They were pretty good but I think your recipe is the way to go. Thanks for a great post!
