Cookie recipe from about 1900. Possibly earlier. From handwritten record in grandmother's cookbook. These are easy and addictive--the cakier version of a sugar cookie.

Ingredients
  • 1 cup LARD (I use butter or margarine)
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 3/4 to 2 cups sugar
  • 2 Tablespoons warm water
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 3 1/2 to 4 cups flour
  • These cookies are good as they are but next time I will add some vanilla.

Directions
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Cream together the shortening and the sugar.
  3. Add eggs and beat until well blended.
  4. Blend in flour, soda, baking powder and water.
  5. Dough should be firm but not so stiff that the mixer has to strain!
  6. Drop cookies by teaspoons onto well-greased cookie sheets. They spread a lot so give them some space.
  7. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes or until you can see the edges turning golden brown.
  8. Remove from pan and put on parchment or wax paper to cool.

Nothing better than a good old fashioned sugar cookie. This one sounds great. You have my 5. Great post.

I love a good sugar cookie ... these sound great!

I tested them out plain but it took all my will power not to add some flavoring. Still, they ARE good just the way they are.

Sounds good, like this one a lot...thanks!
