Why spend money on the specialty salt blends when you can just make them at home? All you need is a small food processor or a "for spices only" coffee bean grinder and your imagination! :)

Ingredients
  • ~~~These will vary to your taste and availability, here are just some ideas~~~
  • ***Please use this as a guideline***
  • 2T kosher salt
  • 3T fresh herb or spice(any fresh herb will work, and no need to chop:sage, thyme, rosemary, chives, cilantro, basil, even parsley or celery leaves or seed) or use DRY minced garlic, onion or hot pepper
  • 2t peppercorns
  • ---also, as I did for the above blend, you can add lemon or lime zest to the above ingredients. Lemon/basil or pepper, of course, but try lime with cilantro and pepper or hot peppers, etc Just experiment!---
  • Pulse all ingredients in clean coffee bean grinder or small food processor until combined

Directions
  1. I only buy/use kosher or sea salt, and those "garlic salt" and 'celery salt" etc blends are 50% salt...and not the good stuff. So, I make my own. Also a great way to use up your own fresh herbs, as the salt acts as a preserve for the herbs. Just make sure to use only DRY ingredients, no liquids. Have fun with it. :)
  2. ***the blend in the photos is sage/lemon zest/sea salt and mixed peppercorns***

Good post Keni, and love the pics, too. Yeah, I quit buying garlic salt and celery salt YEARS ago. Why should I? Gave this a 5 - no guess work involved - I know it is good.

Do you keep your spices in the refrig.?
