Ingredients

How to make it

  • In large kettle, bring to boil enough water to cover the cabbage.
  • Stick a cooking fork into the cabbage core and lower the head into the water.
  • Loosen and remove about 20 leaves from the cabbage and drain well.
  • Chop remaining cabbage coarsely to make 3 to 4 cups.
  • Heat a large skillet of Dutch oven.
  • Add ground beef and onion to pan.
  • Cook slowly, stirring often, until meat begins to brown.
  • Stir in chopped cabbage, salt, oregano, basil, rice, pepper and tomato sauce.
  • Cover and simmer, stirring often, for about 20 minutes.
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  • Trim the thick ribs from the cabbage leaves.
  • Arrange half the leaves, overlapping slightly, in the bottom of a 13x9x2 pan.
  • Spoon meat mixture on top.
  • Top with remaining cabbage leaves, overlapping as before.
  • Melt butter in small pan.
  • Stir in flour and salt.
  • Beat with a whisk until smooth.
  • Gradually stir in milk.
  • Bring to a boil, whicking constantly, until sauce thickens and boils for 1 minute.
  • Remove from heat.
  • Beat eggs in a bowl with wire whisk.
  • Gradually beat in hot cream sauce.
  • Pour evenly over casserole.
  • Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese.
  • Bake for 45 minutes OR until top is set.
  • Brown under broiler, if desired.

I like those one dish meals, especially during this busy time of the year. Make it early pop in the oven and dinner is done. Thanks for posting. donna
