Ingredients

How to make it

  • Steam hot dogs and heat buns or, if cooking only one of two, nuke them together in microwave.
  • Put hot dog in bun or, if you're really hungry use two dogs, one on each half of the bun.
  • Slice into bite-size pieces (cut completely through dog and bun)
  • Maintaining shape, use a large spatula to move to a dish shaped like bun but a bit larger. (If you don't have such a dish, a round dish that will just hold the bun works fine.)
  • Sprinkle oyster crackers over the dog and bun to just about cover.
  • Pour a couple of scoops of chile over everything, covering completely.
  • Top with mustard and, if you desire chopped onion and/or dill pickles.

Actually I was born and grew up in Alabama.....NC is now my home though. I use to make scrambled dogs all the time....My NC husband thought I was crazy when I fixed these the first time....mine is a bit different though. 2 slices of bread, cooked cut up weiners, add mustard, cheese, (onion, if you want) dill pickle mix, and crushed up crackers, top with homemade chilli (when is really good or Hormel chili with beans)....enjoy easy to make and children like these.

My family and I have eaten these all my life (and I am well over 50) Family history says my grandfather invented these as a short order cook......in Columbus GA. Your recipe and description right down to how to slice'em are identical to his recipe.....so either he really did invent these many years ago, or he brought this recipe back with him as his own to South Alabama.....this is one of our family traditions that we just cannot wait to make each fall....in fact I had one tonight and posted on my Facebook page that I was having "Scrambled dogs for dinner." When someone asked "Ok, what is that?" I googled it and found you and your recipe....amazing that you say it originated in Columbus......wonderful!!!!! 5 plus stars

This looks fun and delicious. I love chili dogs - love, love, love them....but how fun to cut them up and add the oyster crackers...and then ladle the chili over. Thanks so much for such a neat recipe - I'll be trying this soon. :) Vickie

P.S. What is it about oyster crackers? I could eat them by the handfuls. Plain, in or over just about anything. So good.
