Ingredients

How to make it

  • In a very large pan, melt butter in oil. Brown beef on all sides. Sprinkle with salt. Remove beef with slotted spoon to large crock pot. Add mushrooms and onions to pay and sauté until soft. Add mushrooms and onions along with juices to the crock pot. Add 2 T. paprika and all other ingredients except sour cream and noodles to crock pot. Include chili peppers if you like it a bit spicy, but depending on the peppers, it could be too spicy for small kids. Cook covered on high for about 5 hours until beef is soft. Adjust salt, pepper and paprika. Remove bay leaves and chili peppers. Add sour cream and mix thoroughly. Serve over noodles. Serves 8-10 as a main dish.

Worcester sauce is not very hungarian and I have never seen it in any hungarian recipe, at least not recipes from centuries ago (as the recipe claims).
Authentic spelling would be gulyas or goulash — it has nothing to do with ghouls unless maybe it’s hallowe’en...
Mandatory is fat & onion, meat, potatoes and sweet paprika.
I am sure this recipe tastes great but I would hesitate to refer to it as authentic hungarian goulash.

I just read that the sour cream bit :(
The hungarian herdsmen not likely to be packing sour cream and I have never seen it served with a bowl of guylasleves, sorry.

If my Grandmother knew you added sour cream she'd smash your hand with a meat mallet, lol!

This looks great. I fondly remember the goulash when I was in Hungary. You got my 5.

Yes. This is a kid friendly recipe that can be made R-rated by just substituting 1 T. of the sweet Hungarian paprika with hot. Pride of Szeged makes both. And believe me, Szeged doesn't have much else to be proud about, so give 'em a hand and buy some!
