This is the dad's basic recipe. If you like a good tomato-y chili this is it. Goes well with Fritos, crackers, cheese on top and sour cream. If you like a little more heat add some Cholula hot sauce.

Ingredients
  • 2 lbs ground beef
  • 3 lbs chili meat (ground chuck)
  • 1 T garlic powder
  • 2 T Lawry's seasoning
  • 1 T chili powder
  • 1 med red onion chopped
  • 2-2 oz. packets chili seasoning (we use Williams no salt)
  • 1 T salt
  • 28 oz can tomato puree
  • 28 oz can tomato sauce
  • 28 oz can crushed tomatoes
  • 1-10 oz can Ro-tel tomatoes with green chiles
  • 4-15 oz cans chili beans (med)
  • 1 cup tomato juice (V-8 is good, too)

Directions
  1. Brown meats, garlic powder, Lawry's, chili powder, onion.
  2. While that is browning, combine all cans, chili seasoning, salt and tomato juice.
  3. Bring to a simmer.
  4. Drain meat mixture and add to simmering sauce.
  5. Bring to a boil then reduce to simmer at least 1 hour. He went 3.
  6. The longer it simmers the better.
