How to make it

  • Wash blackberries and spread on the bottom of a greased baking dish.
  • Add water and sprinkle all with cinnamon.
  • Combine sugar and flour, whisk egg, then cut egg into sugar and flour until crumbly.

I had good luck with this. I'm not quite sure how big my dish was but I posted a picture. I was afraid it wouldn't work when I saw the berries swimming in the water and watched the topping sink in. But, it rose up and crisped up nicely - I guess from all the sugar. It probably would be great with ice cream but I found the topping sweet enough to do without. Mine came out perfectly in 45 minutes. I made my own self-rising flour as well.
I put a thread in IMI.
Thanks for leaving us another great one, Griz!

Dish was good. Mother liked it too. Uncovered the dish to find the topping was still in a dough state. Continued cooking until the topping browned up a little. Topping turned out more crusty than I prefer. Was looking forward to a more biscuit like crust. Hope you like the pics.

Wonder if you would change the sugar content if you were making domesticated blackberries vs. wild blackberries.
I don't buy self-rising flour. It's just too easy to convert AP flour into self-rising flour and it's cheaper too. Also keeps me using my dry stores so they won't get outdated.
Cobbler is in the oven, covered, getting berry hot.
You didn't spec out the size of the baking dish. I started out greasing an oblong 2-quart dish but then it looked like there was just not going to be enough berries to barely cover the bottom of the dish, so I switched to an 8x8 2-quart dish. It's better. But next time I'm thinking on putting it in an 1.5 quart loaf dish. We'll see how this one comes out.
Covered the dish. Don't like the topping too crisp. Will uncover it to let the topping brown up after the cooking time is over.

Made some pics too. I'll post if the dish comes out good.
