Ingredients

How to make it

  • Cut the bread into 4 even loaves (about 8-10" each). Slice each loaf all the way open. Spread mustard on the inside of the tops and bottoms of the bread.
  • Place an even layer of pork on the bottom halves. Then an even layer of ham. Then an even layer of swiss cheese. Then a layer of pickles. Cover with the top halves of bread.
  • Now that the sandwiches are made heat up a cast iron pan over medium high heat. Butter both sides of the sandwiches. Place the sandwiches in the pan and using the flat bottom of another pan press down on the tops of the sandwiches to flatten.
  • Once the bottoms have browned a little, flip them over and once again press to flatten. Once the sandwich is lightly browned on both sides and the cheese is melted (about 3 to 4 minutes each side) remove from the heat and slice diagonally.

Having recently discovered Cuban sandwiches in a restaurant, I was anxious to try making them at home and chose this recipe. Making only 2 sandwiches, I greatly reduced the ingredient amounts and also made a few other changes that didn't drastically alter the recipe, but better suit our taste. For starters, I didn't have Cuban or French bread, so subbed with whole wheat hamburger buns, turning the flat insides of the buns to the outside, making them easier to butter and brown. We're not dill pickle fans, so I omitted them, as we do in the restuarant, We loved the sandwiches and are happy we still have some leftover pork roast slices to make more! Thank you for sharing your recipe, Ebony! Added to the I Made II group on January 2, 2018:

This one is a classic! The store was out of bread so I used hoagie rolls. Worked perfect and was actually easier to grill and eat. See more in IMI II Reviews.

Ohhhhhhhhhh... I can almost taste it now. This sandwich sounds so delicious. I just wish my Mother was here and I would make it especially for her. She loved the Monte Cristo sandwich and I know she would have loved this one. Thank you for sharing your recipe. I'm anxious to prepare it.

I love Cuban Sandwiches, Monte Cristos -- anything up that alley! I make these with shredded pork meat and thicker-sliced ham; I will try it this way next time, but, no matter how you 'slice' it, it's all good! TY for the post (and pics...)
