Another fun post. Foodie friends said I should post pics. I wanted an area that would provide peace and harmony with nature and this is the result. The serenity in the early morning hours of spring is soothing and in winter when it is storming it ... More

Ingredients
  • Clear Redwood 6x6 posts and beams
  • Clear 2x6
  • Clear 2x2’s
  • Flat Filon
  • 1200 screws for the top
  • Countless screws to assemble
  • Finished size 16 x 24
  • Click on any pic to enlarge for better viewing

Directions
  1. Design it in your head
  2. Make post supports that descend 3 feet into the hole and 3 feet above. Take post supports to have them galvanized to prevent rust.
  3. Build super structure pre-drilling all holes, no nails used, only screws.
  4. Rip 2x6’s into 2x2’s on a band saw.
  5. Use a router to round all squared edges of 2x2’s ripped. Inner cuts of the 2x6 in to 2x2's, now 2x2's have square edges, not tolerated. Total length of routing 2x2's - ½ mile. Time to rout edges 1.5 hours. That was interesting routing.
  6. Pre-drill holes before screwing 2x2’s to rafters.
  7. Weld flat brackets to 3 inch square tubing and attach to beams for support.
  8. Make corbels using a garbage can lid for the curves.
  9. Install special flat Filon using 1200 screws with rubber washers.
  10. Paint all bolt heads, washers and nuts Hunter Green to match door ( yes the dictionary word applies, but it is the detail that makes this a piece of art).
  11. Find wonderful plants.
  12. Pour exposed aggregrate concrete.
  13. Find decorations, an on going project. I try to find things that have a natural look, very hard as some are goofy looking. Send pics of anything that you might come across that would look good, I would pay for it and the shipping.
  14. Time to build 3 months. Because it all had to be perfect of course.
  15. Sit out on a Saturday morning with a warm drink, all the kids love to visit (my kitties) and rub along the leg. Some even lay down and roll around.
  16. Hope a humming bird visits, they make nests in my trees, very little nests with very little eggs.
  17. Swallowtails occasionaly visit.
  18. It is good.

Very nicely done. Looks cool and peaceful.

The result of your effort looks nice and comfortable, congrats!

What a wonderful space and place. Fantastic!

Gorgeous!

Very nice! :)

Absolutely inspiring. Beautiful. You are so lucky, I miss my yard and garden. You have a lovely sanctuary.

Absolutly gorgeous! JJ you have such a gift! What a perfect place to spend some relaxing days reflecting on the amazing life you've lead. I wish I could experience it first hand, care to come out here and build one for me too??? Hee hee, just kiding...mostly...kinda...lol, it truly is beautiful though. ;D

Cheers!
Laura

Wow! Absolutely beautiful! Come down here and build one for us... since we just had our trees cut due to root rot, we have a huge backyard area now. Very nice!

I'm giving my husband this to study, I want one on the other side of my carport.

*wink* I need one!

The new wind chime is a air tank with a wood ball inside. Sounds like a bell warning boats of the shoreline. Got it this weekend at the local Arts Festival in Town & County Village.

Re metal sculptures shown here including the tank wind chime, they are by Kyle and Rita Yates of Metal Lawn & garden Art

The wonderful pottery face sculptures are by Connie Chadwick. For more information on Connie:

Both are nice people.

JJ that is something I will dream about for years to come. I always wanted a gazebo, but what you have created is a little bit of heaven for yourself. Every bit of it is just so imaginative and stunning on its own that you could take one section at a time and write a short story about it. As you can tell I truly love it and admire every bit of thought and hard work and love you put into it. Thank you for sharing your genius with us. Joymarie

I LOVE Charlie the Bun-Bun and the "Lovely Lady". I have a similar lady made by a local potter who used his wife's face as the model. They were sold as "Tree Spirits". I have one hanging on a swamp maple in our yard. I'm going to check out Connie Chadwick.

You and my husband are two of a kind. Just the kind of work he does. ANAL. But I get to reap the benefits. Beautiful atrium, JJ! As I speak, he's building a soffited eave over my bedroom french slider. I have trellises and arbors all over my yard.

Beautiful.
